1  --  FAMILY  TIE

Every species has undergone constant development of a few thousand or million years through the influences of location, climate and diet, making even the hair and skin color and texture of a southerner look differently from a northerner.  So with the egg of a Métis out of Manitoba and the sperm of a Chinese Canadian, I was born Hannah Sun, a Vancouverite with a feature of my own. My parents have different opinions in many things, motivating me to carry the cross for investigation and exploration to reach understanding.

My exploration goes beyond two parental cultures, getting into those of fishes, insects, birds and animals. In Antarctica, a few days after laying her egg, a female Emperor penguin would leave the incubation to her mate in dark, cold winter. She goes north into the sea with chicks and other female penguins for feeding. A male Emperor penguin without egg will pick up any abandoned egg to put on his feet and to stand in huddle, fasting for two months until the female return with food to feed the chicks.  How I admire the enduring, fatherly love of these Emperor Penguins.  Obviously, male and female are like left hand and right hand designed for co-operation in bringing up the next generation in different hours or periods.  Therefore, their opinions and strategies are criss-crossing.

The unusually warm winter in 2003 has given British Columbian bears hard time hibernating. This leads to my understanding that creatures change even their ancient habits due to the influence of weather. For survival, creatures have to fit into their environment: living in ocean, creatures must swim; on land, they must crawl or walk; in air, they must fly, creating different cultures in different places, making each creature or person unique.

Without the body, how can I explore the world, having my mind developed?  So, I am thankful to God and society in giving me a chance to live and deeply grateful to my parents in bringing me up with love and protection. A baby cries with free will after being born.  I am not so sure the motive of such action – to demand attention rather than to swear for obedience even when vocabulary doesn't exist?  Obviously, nobody is born spiritually a slave to parents or guardians and I am definitely not a recording machine to echo my parents’ opinions.

Since everybody has a different taste, chewing in different rhythm and drinking different quantity of water, these must be the traits of uniqueness in human spirit that can't be duplicated with cloning, equal education and same environment. Otherwise, all angels should have the same spirit without any fallen angels or not? It is not the genes and environment but the spirit through education and understanding that makes life pleasant or depressed to individual member in a family.

My English teacher once took a bouquet of fading flowers into class and asked each student standing up to talk about it a minute.   Every one told an absolutely different story in connecting with those flowers. Apparently, looking at the same object, among the twenty-six students, none had the same thought or feeling!  I could see the fading flowers were once beautiful but they can’t last long; however, the memory of the gift given by someone would certainly last forever.  The bouquet brought me several memories on different occasions of various persons.  But the most impressed memory came from Aunt Tracy's wedding. I can tell ten stories from the same object with different opinions due to time and knowledge, environment, personal career and mood. An adult definitely can’t feel the same as his past in childhood: no person and event could substitute the other person and event in memory, in time, and in space as the memory of a teacher can’t substitute the memory of a nanny or a mother in my life of one period of time or in one event:  these three persons can only be related with three different stories and times.

I am more than a brain for storing information - I am a spirit exploring feelings in human souls, participating actions in society and taking responsibility of my actions to be graded by teachers who help setting a career in my life. So, my first goal was to leave home to be independent for my self-esteem although I would like to become a teacher later on.  Being a waitress in the evening would not affect much my education.  My goals can be reached step by step without rushing to jump from kindergarten into university.

As a widow, my paternal grandmother, Esther Sun from Singapore, used to live in Richmond, BC.  She has thirteen siblings. Her niece, Tracy Link used to babysit me, teaching me to play True or False at my early age, asking questions from life to universe. She has become a dentist and her wedding had been postponed three years due to her fiancé's relocation, job security and a search for suitable housing. She dreamt of having a big wedding like her cousins but she must pay for it herself. Anyway, Chinese guests often give lucky money as wedding gifts that a wedding banquet should have no problem in balancing expenses.  Still, her stingy father, Mark Link, considered it sufficient to have a marriage certificate to save money, objecting to hold a wedding banquet. To please her father, Tracy bought him a tuxedo, hoping he would be happy and nice to her wedding guests. Tracy's mother, Laura, also forced herself to please Mark so that he wouldn't be rude to her overseas relatives who would be staying at her house in Vancouver during Tracy's wedding.

Naturally, Tracy should have a small wedding to put more down payment on her dream house but whom could she delete from her guest list? A month before her wedding, Mark's mother notified him that Tracy had forgotten to invite some of her relatives whom he must bring the invitations personally. It sounded like an order from the king's mother. Tracy must add names onto her guest list. What a headache!  The garden restaurant booked nine months in advance can sit no more than two hundred guests. Tracy couldn't invite the spouses of her good friends even upon requests.

After spending a lot of airfare expenses, relatives from overseas would hardly come just for a wedding. Grandaunt Sophia from Singapore loves photography. She went to Alaska to take pictures before attending the wedding. Other grandaunts from Europe and from Australia went first to Las Vegas. Laura helped booking trips for them. Since Laura's siblings are also my grandma's siblings, we helped in accommodating them.

The bridegroom, Henry Johnson, is from Los Angeles but born and raised in Canada. In the nineties, he couldn't find a job for a year after getting his degree in computer science.  So he had gone down to the States and got a job within a month. His mother still hopes Canadian economy would get better that her son would resettle here in Vancouver.

Tracy, knowing Henry over ten years since teenage working part-time in ski resort, followed him to the States, taking four months and three thousand dollars lawyer’s expenses to apply an American work permit sponsored by her American employer. Yet, her heart is still in Vancouver.  She misses her old friends here although new friends are wonderful too. So, Tracy tried to talk my father and other Canadian cousins into moving down to California, earning higher salary with lower income tax rate; besides, American mortgage interest is tax deductible.  Ah! It sounds good until putting all the pros and cons of each country on black and white first. As Dad had just got a job offered in the States, he and Mom went down to California for ten days and came back deciding to remain in Canada. However, it has taken me several years later to make up my mind. What is the best for oneself may never be the best for others or everybody would end up marrying the same person.

2 --  UNEXPECTED  EVENTS

Tracy had bought and paid her wedding gown six months in advance without taking it home worrying that her size might change a little bit on her wedding day.  So she let the shop keep it for her second fitting. Tracy and Henry returned to Vancouver a week before their wedding.  In a rush to meet Tracy at the bridal shop on Tuesday, I missed a step and fell three steps downstairs.  Luckily, it didn't hurt much.  But, in the bridal shop, Tracy couldn't find her wedding gown! The saleslady blamed her for not phoning in first.  Otherwise, the dry-cleaning would be done earlier.  Why a brand new wedding gown required any cleaning without paid for?  In another word, the shop had cheated and rented her wedding gown out to somebody without her consent!  Yet, Tracy didn't make a fuss about it.
Perhaps she shouldn't add more problems on her wedding week.

I was shocked and couldn't understand why Tracy would let people make a fool out of her, paying all her bills to the photographer and to her banquet in advance too. But then I realized that her easygoing character has initiated a bond of good faith and sincerity to strangers at first sight. Whoever has cheated her is making a fool of oneself in losing a friend and free business advertising that comes in chain. Thus, with the way customers were so badly treated, that bridal shop was in fact out of business a year later or has it moved to a new location with expansion?  I shouldn't be so sure.

Henry's brothers gave him a stag party in a bar on Thursday evening.  Many of their guests left at midnight.  Henry got drunk and hanged on there till two o'clock in the morning with his three brothers.  After his best man having an argument with someone in the bar, the four brothers walked to their car and were surrounded by ten persons to be beaten up badly.  Henry fell unconsciously on sidewalk and was sent to hospital.  Few hours later, Tracy came whining, telling us that the wedding rehearsal on Friday evening was cancelled.  She asked whether the wedding on Saturday should also be cancelled.
Granduncle David asked Tracy,  “How do you like to wait for another year for your wedding while mishap may come up again and again?  Who cares whether Henry has a black eye or not?  As long as he can lie on a stretcher to say ‘I do’, why should you object?”
Tracy laughed, “Henry doesn't want his black eyes to be seen on our wedding photos.”
Luckily, Henry recovered quite well in one day.  The four brothers wouldn't let their mother see them before wearing heavy makeup.  A mother is always the last one to know about any mishap.

Grandaunt Sheila came on Friday evening telling us how terrible it was the grand hotel Laura had booked for her in Las Vegas through a travel agent.  It was under renovation: the hot water tap was not working.  She found a roadside bed and breakfast for forty dollars the next day and it was superb.  Besides, she complained that the car rental fee was charged much more than the stated rate booked by the travel agent. Well, too bad: without American car insurance, foreigners have to pay extra $20 a day for accident insurance.

After I spent a month helping Grandma Esther to clean up her basement suite, decorating it with new furniture to house seven wedding guests, Sheila found the room too cold for her and moved out the same day.  Why didn't she turn on the electric heater?  Isn't it hard to please those we have served, especially the distant relatives whom we have met the first time? I wonder whether I should feel hurt or released by such rejection of our goodwill and services. Later on, I found out Sheila had actually left for another reason: she was not free to smoke among non-smokers.  So she moved out to stay with smokers.

Yes, unpleasant events came in chain.  One should truly count the blessing if there were just three such events.  Henry's boss came up from Los Angeles to attend his wedding.  So did Tracy's American colleagues.  They stayed in hotels a few blocks away from one another.  On Saturday morning of the wedding day, Tracy went with Henry to inform his boss the mishap in his stag party, asking permission in postponing a day from work.  Unknowingly, Henry left his hotel key in his boss's room. Before Henry discovered this, his boss had already left the hotel.  Both Tracy and Henry couldn't get into their hotel suite that was registered under David's name and had called for his help.  Before his arrival, the sympathetic chambermaid had already let Tracy into the room after learning her problem.

Tracy wanted her wedding cake to be decorated with fresh orchids.  So she ordered a week in advance five dozen orchids for the cake decoration and then another five dozens for bouquet and corsages.  After the best man picking up the package of orchids and delivering it to the cake shop the morning of her wedding day, the baker couldn't find any orchids for cake decoration there!  Had Tracy forgotten to order those orchids or the florist had forgotten to put down the order?  There was no time for argument when the best man phoned in.  Tracy told him simply to buy another five dozens of orchids at the nearest florist for the occasion. Later on, nobody even remembered to bring the package of corsages to the party.

The outdoor wedding ceremony was taken place in a ten-acre garden restaurant, which has a few dining rooms.  For the reception, Tracy had rented the banquet room and the adjoining pavilion with outdoor tables and chairs. The disc jockey had come into the banquet room setting up his equipment before wandering quietly away.  Nobody recognized him or knew where he had gone while Tracy being the only one in charge of the wedding, was waiting for him to play the wedding march.  She sat in powder room worrying about her ceremony with neither the marriage minister nor the disc jockey coming punctually or phoning in. The marriage minister's later explanation was being delayed by traffic jam. What an excuse! She had been chosen for living in the same quiet district where the wedding was taken place. Yet, she could have had performed another wedding ceremony far away in the early afternoon. Thus, picking a marriage minister according to address closest to the wedding location can also go wrong.

Wedding guests had arrived early on that day.  Relatives had walked for hours in the garden taking pictures with Laura.  They started wondering the cause of delay in the wedding ceremony.  Even Laura didn't know why her daughter and Mark had disappeared for a long time. She got annoyed and went into the building to look for them.  Tracy, Mark, the bridesmaid, the flower-girl, and the ring-bearer were all in the powder room, expecting Laura to stay and wait for the music to play, so that Samuel would walk her to the gazebo at the far corner of the garden with the rest followed.  Laura should have learnt this at the rehearsal, which was cancelled.

Ah, the rehearsal was not the only thing cancelled. Originally, Tracy had planned to have four bridesmaids and would make their dresses herself.  Yet, the mother of one bridesmaid went to question Laura how could anyone expect her daughter to wear a home-made dress in public. Furthermore, to avoid the argument about the style and color of bridesmaids’ dresses, Tracy realized that she couldn't have four cousins but one best friend to be her bridesmaid.

How long should the party wait for the wedding march to begin? Who knew what to do? Tracy was in dismay.  Samuel tried to calm down his sister and mother saying if necessary, he would play a disc and get another marriage minister performing the ceremony. He went first to the restaurant manager requesting him to look for the DJ through an announcement on loudspeaker.  They found him waiting at the gazebo for the marriage minister's arrival.  Should an inexperienced bride have such logic that the DJ would be there?  The marriage minister finally arrived about half of an hour late.

Right after the wedding ceremony, refreshment should be served at the adjoining pavilion. Yet without notifying Tracy, the arrangement was rearranged with drinks served close by the entrance of the dining room and food on dance floor. Consequently, returning from the garden and staying at the pavilion to be congratulated by guests as planned, Henry and Tracy didn't get any refreshment.  In Fact, Tracy had neither time for breakfast nor lunch that day!  Later, a waiter did carry a tray of food and walked one round to two tables at the pavilion but then left without serving other tables.  Perhaps, the waiters there came only on call basis during weekends that they didn't know how to serve.  Therefore, hungry and thirsty guests should be wise enough to think of serving themselves, following a waiter into the dining room.

At dinner, one guest requested having a seat added next to hers for her teenage daughter who didn't like to sit with other children. In fact, Tracy had already got warnings from her married cousin that each family would like to have a table for immediate family members.  However, with one family having five members and other having six, one person must go to other table.  So, Tracy had a table set for children only. Furthermore, Laura wanted Tracy's cousins from different continents or countries sitting together, making conversation lively and interesting, leading to one another's future visit. She maintains the goal of a party being a place to meet new faces and friends.  Those who won't try anything new should stay home or go to their favourite restaurants by themselves.  So Tracy had got up all night to plan again and again how her guests should be seated. The seating also indicated clearly the names of guests ordering vegetarian dishes, fish, or meat with or without salt.  Afterwards, a guest told my mother the food had no taste while others found it good.

Without desire of meeting friends and relatives in a wedding, connoisseurs truly come to the wrong place to dine. So one should know his personal purpose of attending a party before accepting it.  The host can't change his own goal for a guest just as a restaurant can't change its style from Greek to Chinese whether any Chinese customer would come or not.  For connoisseurs, may be there should be a potluck party in buffet style on my wedding with every guest bringing his best dish to be shared without assigned seating!

3 --  A  DIFFERENT  APPROACH

The traditional way of introducing close relatives one by one with a long list of names often puts wedding guests into yawning.  Tracy shortened this procedure into a few minutes by requesting the group of guests from the farthest continent to stand up together, then, the next group and another group from other continent, country, or city. Later on, challenging guests for a good laugh at her silly way, Tracy made the best man humbly announce that she and Henry couldn't afford to pay for any broken glass. So, when cousins and friends made requests, instead of clinking glasses, they should come out to sing a song with a word of love in it to make requests. Consequently, one table of guests after another came out to sing or to read something they had composed for the bride and groom to show off their talents. It brought laughter and joy to the party with very little drinking.

What the children enjoyed most was dancing with the bride in a circle that after ten in the evening, a three-year-old boy still refused going home with his parents.
Gifts for Tracy's guests were not left on tables but put in a basket for her and Henry to hand out personally at dinner, walking from table to table, thanking each guest for coming.

The following day, I took Grandaunt Sophia to a store, having her films developed.  Unfortunately, four rolls out of seven were stuck in a developer tank and slightly ruined during a short black out.  They were pictures partly taken in Alaska and partly in Tracy's wedding. I regretted that I had not taken her to a professional laboratory.  The ruin of her films made me tremble.
Grandaunt Sophia consoled me.  “With a blackout in district, accidents can happen to any laboratory big or small.  Nobody can know such natural disaster or accident in advance. So, I try to enjoy every moment of my life for better or worse with no regret in facing one mishap after another. You should never let any mishap or disaster destroy your adventurous spirit.  It is fun to conquer adversity.”

In fact, there were five major blackouts in summer 2003: one was from New York States to Toronto that last from a few hours to a few days varied from district to district; others were in London, Sweden, Denmark and Italy.  It was terrible to be trapped in metro for hours or in heavy traffic without traffic lights! One should stay calm for communication to follow backup procedures.

Tracy had got a professional photographer to take one hundred wedding pictures for her.  She got Henry's sister to tell the photographer what he should take for the groom's family.  Laura insisted that a group picture of each table should also be taken, having none to be left out.  A one-time camera was thus left on each table for guests to take pictures.

Another lesson I have learnt is that adults have no right to criticize the other's manner directly.  So they use indirect approach -- the induction method.  For instance, while Laura was making vegetarian sandwiches, Mabel used a knife to remove tomato seeds from those slices, turning them soggy. Immediately, Laura said to her sister,  “Mabel, since you don't like tomato seeds, I'm making sure that there is no tomato in your sandwiches.  If you don't like the way I prepare it, you can buy your own lunch at Stanley Park.”
Mabel then replied, “OK.  I take the whole slice of tomato!”
Thus, without one harsh word, Mabel thought of correcting her own manner.

The Chinese in fact have the manner of agreeing with one another before offering an alternative suggestion. Hence, Granduncle David told Tracy that mishap might happen repeatedly in different ways, should she keep on postponing her wedding or follow through her plan for better or worse?

Life can't be perfect as planned: it is a continuous challenge of human wisdom in dealing with unexpected events to achieve the plan as is.  So we also need someone like Sophia to say encouraging words with understanding and compassion whenever we make mistakes.

Finally, being a member of the host family, one must be a patient guide, a cautious driver, a good cook, and a busy maid to relatives from far away countries.  To stay calm as sea captain to hold the course of a stormy sea is the only way to reach destination. This was probably the meaning of my bad dream of a car accident a week before Tracy's wedding.

PART TWO -- PERSONAL CHALLENGES

4  –  DILEMMA

Studying in Toronto, I lived with Grandaunt Carmela for a few years.  In the morning of September 11, 2001 Granduncle Bert went into the backyard telling Grandaunt Carmela with a trembling voice that their daughter Susan had just called; a hijacked plane from Boston to New York had crashed at the World Trade Centre!  Their son, Ted, without answering his cell phone calls, might be on that flight.  The news had certainly shocked Carmela that she closed her eyes and prayed, “Oh God! Take me instead of my son.  I don't want to live longer than any of my children!”

How shocking was it to the world that not just one hijacked plane but two had crashed into the two towers of the World Trade Centre at 8:45 a.m. and at 9:03 a.m. The burning fuel of the two planes had brought down the two towers an hour later. After the two attacks, all the American airports were shut down at 9:17 a.m. and all bridges and tunnels were closed at 9:21 a.m.
However, there was still another hijacked plane - taken off earlier at 8:40 a.m. from Dulles Airport, Washington to Los Angeles - crashed at the Pentagon that all the planes in America were then grounded at 9:40 a.m.
Furthermore, the fourth hijacked plane from Newark, New Jersey, left at 8:01 a.m. to San Francisco had changed course -- aiming at Camp David or the White House. It crashed on a field at Johnstown, Pennsylvania at 10 a.m. upon the rising of some passengers fighting against the terrorists.

Regularly, about fifty thousand people worked inside the World Trade Center. When the two towers fell down, some three thousand people including rescuers such as firemen, paramedics and policemen were missing or killed in it. Canada had then shut down the airports just for the diverted US flights to land in Canada.

None of Ted's siblings could reach him by his cell phone that they all called home asking after him. Susan finally found out from his manager that he had gone to Chicago.  Meanwhile, receiving Carmela’s email while waiting ignorantly at Chicago Airport for a flight back to Boston, Ted called home. Since all the American flights were cancelled, he decided to take a train; but even all the train stations were closed, so he rented a car driving back to Boston.

Uncle Anthony worked on the 37th floor of World Trade Centre and lived in New Jersey.  Before he got time to step out of the door on ground floor, the second aeroplane crashed into it. So luckily, he was safe from the debris flying down from the crushed plane.  Due to the calmness and politeness of the people in the two towers without rushing to escape, ninety percent of the workers had escaped death miraculously in orderly manner. However, the chaos in New York afterwards took Anthony nine hours instead of an hour to get home.

A week later, the stock value in New York had lost US$1.4 trillion.  Consequently, American airlines and aerospace industries had started laying off one hundred fifteen thousand workers with other companies soon followed the example. America fell into great recession with people talking about American Middle East policies triggering terrorists’ suicide plane attacks, which may have no end in sight.  The American President immediately declared wars on terrorists.

An American mother whose husband died at the World Trade Center was on Oprah’s talk show. She didn't want her sons going to war for revenge, causing more innocent death on both sides like the Vietnam War.  In fact, the land of Afghanistan has been hidden with 80,000 landmines.  In my opinion, war with terrorists should use commandos in four to six persons a group to capture terrorists quietly without harming civilians. People who hate terrorists shouldn't act like terrorists to hurt civilians. However, military experts believe that more terrorist attacks would come with biological warfare. Terrorists must be stopped before expanding further.  Then President Bush pledged to spend US$325 million in aid to Afghan refugees, claiming that he just wanted the Afghanistan government handing out Osama bin Laden for justice.

Well, the Taliban military regime in Afghanistan was trained and supported by Americans to fight and to topple the former Afghanistan government, Northern Alliance, that was supported by Russians five years before. Unfortunately, this Taliban regime had turned against America under Osama bin Laden’s financial and military control. He is a multi-billionaire’s son from Yemen, unwanted and driven out of Arabia, Egypt and Sudan as terrorist.

People in Afghanistan suffered a lot under the Taliban regime: women were not allowed to earn a living or to walk without hooded veils and men were conscripted to fight for the government against the rebels, the Northern Alliance. Being unbelievers there would be stoned to death in public. It was also said that Afghan tribesmen were so poor that without foreign aid, they might die in the coming winter.

Many Muslims in Pakistan and in other countries have been supporting Osama bin Laden as a Saladin or caliph to make a holy war on their so-called corrupted governments besides Israel and America.  Yet, how do women like to live under bin Laden’s reign without education or freedom to take a walk without burkas?  In fact, under his influential reign, Afghanistan has been facing four years of draught, turning a fertile land into a wasteland. Could such a man be chosen or blessed by God?  Why would a good leader waste time attacking foreigners in other countries instead of spending time in production work, feeding his people?  Sure, bin Laden had done some charity to establish orphanage but it was simply for turning orphans into his future suicide bombers with no family to turn to - no place to run if disobeying his orders.

On October 7th, American and British missiles started striking Afghanistan military bases and dropping off food and medicine to the people at the same time. Yet, how effective was the bombing method?  Although it was right on targets as claimed, it was like sending missiles blindly to kill an ant in the hole of a desert or a fish in an ocean, being costly to Americans but ineffective in catching bin Laden whose network has been scattered all over the world.  So, why Afghanistan was singled out to be bombed or just to be the first one in Bush's schedule?

Muslim countries including Iran, Palestine, Pakistan and Arabia had sympathy with America for being drawn to war. Only Saddam Hussein of Iraq, being sanctioned by Americans since the Gulf War, condemned the attack of Afghanistan. Besides, there were five thousand Palestinians led by Hamas to demonstrate against the invasion of Afghanistan.  After Palestinian police crushed down the demonstration, terrorists had burned down the police station. At Pakistani border, neutral Pakistani citizens were forced by terrorists to go protesting against America or else their homes and shops would be vandalized. Thus, Osama bin Laden has been leading the extremists to use America as an enemy and God as an excuse to fight civil wars in various countries.

Of course I am for peace because I am helpless in defence like a lamb.  I just wonder would God allow terrorists to use His name to reign over the world?  I don't believe true religious people would use God's name to make hate crimes against unbelievers and treat women worse than slaves, allowing no music to be played or books to be read at home. Religions all preach about God's grace that is humanity and righteousness. His children should not worship high priests as His images to fight and die for their ambition and greediness.

Esther wrote me saying, “Crime is all over the world.  Even in Canada, a crazy gunman had killed a group of women engineering students in classroom a decade ago. A school building had been completely burnt downed by four Canadian children few years ago. Then a crazy teacher had also set her school on small fire thrice before being caught.  School should be the safest place on earth but it is not safe at all. Thus, we must put our fate in God's hands staying calm as usual to perform our daily duties until death because we are here on earth to learn God's righteousness and be the witnesses thereof.
“Rulers think God doesn't exist that they can use His name to make wars, putting millions of innocent children into starvation and death. Such evil men will definitely meet their own consequences like Hitler to be denounced by his people at the end!  This is God's time in exposing the faces of devils before judging them in public, educating His children not to worship men as God.”

Definitely, Afghan tribesmen rose up to help fighting Taliban while Americans bombarded the Taliban strongholds. The night after Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar letting his followers surrender his last stronghold, Kandahar, he went disappeared. Likewise, bin Laden couldn't be found.  It was estimated that 5,000 al-Qaida fighters at large with the two of them.  They could plan a guerrilla war again since Americans would not grant the foreign fighters amnesty as it has been given to all surrendered Taliban fighters.

On December 6, 2001 in Bonn, Germany, Hamid Karzai of the Pastun tribe that represents 38% of Afghan population had been appointed chairman of the Interim Afghanistan Government for six months with 30 ministries.  Two female doctors have been appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister. Thus, within a short period of two months, this war has brought freedom to Afghan women and a new government with voices including all tribes: 11 Pastun, 8 Tajik, 5 Hazara, 3 Uzbek and 3 other tribal ministers. However, there was no peace but ruin and homelessness in Afghanistan with little humanity aid from western countries afterward.

On April 18, 2004 on television news, I learnt that Americans had not given Afghanistan US$325 million financial aid to rebuild the country, which President Bush had pledged.  He had used the amount without the congress approval on the war on Iraq, and there was absolutely no chemical weapon being found there.  I begin to wonder how can people avoid being fooled by politicians?  Probably, we must act according to justice in our conscience on each case being right or wrong, without being manipulated by power or promises that may trap our souls.  So, our decision or act should still be righteous even when someone betrayed us with false information and promises as Tracy’s wedding must go on even after so many mishaps and betrayal by other parties.

5 --  RESPONSIBILITY

Israel had made Arafat personally responsible for his incapability in controlling suicide bombing in Palestine.  Well, suicide bombers must be like the employee in Indiana on December 6th 2001, killing his co-workers and wounded several of them before killing himself. Like Arafat, should the Indiana governor be responsible for this tragedy?  In fact, there are two million criminals in the United States prisons.  So one in every 145 Americans is a potential criminal.  Should President George Bush, like Arafat, be responsible for those criminal activities in his country?  I don’t think sincere peace talk between two nations should ever be interfered by uncontrollable terrorists and criminals’ activities.

Truly, terrorists are faceless everywhere in the States.  In October 2001, a man attacked a Greyhound bus driver, causing a bus accident, killing a few passengers and wounding all of them.  Is he better than any Palestinian suicide bomber? A month later, a drunker in Fairbanks had used a hunting rifle shooting a hole into the Trans-Alaska pipeline with one million liters of oil spilt on to the wilderness contaminating the land. After losing money in stock market or in business, a few day-traders had also killed their family members, business associates and stockbrokers before committing suicide in 2001.  Besides, there are car accidents almost every day in big cities.  Often it is due to drivers talking on a cell-phone. Who knows how to fight against these terrorists unlimited to the number in Israel or bin Laden’s Afghan Camp?

There were 14.7 million Canadians working while the population is over thirty million. Without income or husband’s signature, housewives can’t apply for a credit card. Life is dull without jobs and respect. For pocket money, some youths seek criminal activity. All over the world, some poor children target tourists. Then, there was the Tim McVeigh who bombed up the federal building of Oklahoma in 1995 killing 168 persons including children to protest against society: terrorists and civil wars are at home and in many countries. To fight terrorism must first solve the unemployment problem of the world, then the policies of society.

Once in Vancouver, a youth named Joel got off a bus.  He was beaten half death with severe brain injury to lie in coma for weeks in hospital and must learn to walk again afterward. Still, the two young robbers have got only a sentence of house arrest of 18 months.  Many robbers had killed victims just for a few dollars.  No wonder the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said that poverty calls bigger threat than terrorism.

In America as in Canada, each criminal in jail costs taxpayers from six to nine thousand dollars a month to support. Yet, there is in fact hardly any more space in state prisons to keep them that they are most likely to be set free on parole. A young American criminal on television informed audience saying that he was a victim being indulged in small crimes by society with forgiveness of trivial crimes until he became a killer.  Still, he was released afterwards.  But then, a gangster had shot him during a gunfight that he has had to live in wheelchair for life.

In April 1999, two high school students in Littleton, Colorado, the United States, shot at 39 people in school. Thirteen of them were killed; then the gunmen turned the guns on themselves.
One evening in November 1999, on a busy American freeway, due to road rage, a young woman shot dead a stranger  - a mother of three small children who drove home from work in a rush.  Self-indulgence in human being is greater than any fear of law, judgement, or death. Is sin the flaw of society or criminal? Who has indulged bad temper?
In one talk show on television, a 14-year-old boy who had done several crimes due to boredom and had even threatened to murder his parents in their sleep.  Some 15-year-old youths nowadays are already drug addicts that can’t be controlled by parents and must be sent to rehabilitation centres.

So terrorists are simply ordinary people in boredom with no self-control but egoism to threaten authority such as parents and society.  But sinners definitely can't avoid the judgement of their own guilty conscience that many had committed suicide soon afterwards as suicide bombers.

Perhaps, nobody but impartial talk show hosts can promote sense of morality to public. The responsibility of a person is divided into three stages. Children's responsibility is to learn practical knowledge of survival such as manners to communicate with others and doing teamwork in writing research papers to express their talents. Adult’s responsibility is to be independent, bringing up next generation. Senior citizens should be responsible for personal health while preparing for a spiritual journey meeting God or the saint of one's own choice.

6  – ENCOURAGEMENT

On television, Oprah interviewed two young men, aged 21 and 24, who still lived at home with their mother. Sometimes, they got some small jobs to do.  Yet, that could not last long. When they built themselves a very nice suite in their mother's basement, their mother regarded this as their plan of staying with her forever, so she wanted to kick them out of her house.  Their achievement had not been encouraged as their potential talents to be developed into enterprise, and they didn't know what to study in college.  They should actually be encouraged to be carpenters, contractors, architects, or interior decorators.
Well, there was another handyman who was in his thirties and had the same fate of unemployment as the two young men.  In his despair, he decided to work for himself advertising on his truck, charging clients $25 an hour for jobs from repairing kitchen faucets to finishing a basement. Within a few years, his business has prospered so much that he has become a multi-millionaire, having twenty branches in different states. Think small and it will grow big.  If a person can paint a wall, he can advertise that in his front lawn or public notice boards in streets costing nothing, saving also time and transportation expenses in doing business around one’s own neighbourhood.

Uncle Samuel went with a classmate to pick berries on a farm at the age of ten, thinking that would be fun. Yet it was hard work with payment next to nothing. He desired to earn more and went to deliver newspapers for several years. Besides, he worked at Playland in summer and at ski resort on weekends during winter seasons. At seventeen, borrowing his mother’s credit cards for cash, he became his own boss.  With a classmate as helper and companion, he rented a heavy truck during one summer holiday to buy and sell fruit from farms to wholesalers. When his profits had all gone to truck rental expenses, he bought a used truck the following year for six thousand dollars to eliminate rental expense.  Every failure drove him a step closer to success with an improvement of his method or strategy.
Driving his truck after midnight for five to six hours, Samuel reached a few farms early in the morning to buy fruits.  Without a refrigerator in his truck, cherries had to be sold within one day or they would get rotten while apples could be kept for two days.  Sometimes his truck broke down on his trip that his fruits could not be kept fresh for long. Immediately, he donated his fruit to food banks so that nothing would be wasted.
Farmers enjoyed doing business with Samuel and invited him into their house as friend.  With a phone call in advance, they would have fruit ready for him upon his arrival.  The wholesalers liked him so much that they offered free cold storage for his fruit that couldn’t be sold the same day.
Retail price of fruit in supermarkets varied from day to day.  For example, cherries might be $1.20 to $2 a pound regularly, they might suddenly be dropped to $0.60 a pound on sale: simply below farmers’ wholesale price! Thus, Samuel learned to be wiser: reading advertisements on newspapers and flyers before placing orders by phone. After two summers, Samuel quit his non-profitable business but gained a valuable experience and lesson.

Investing in a son’s business is like paying one year of his college expenses. With personal experience, a young man in an interview can talk about his ways of handling difficulties, disasters or adversities that he may get a job easily.

Education is much more than following procedures.  It is to learn making decisions by comparing alternative methods to know the minimum gain and the maximum loss and be responsible for it as education. The duty of parent is to make a child learn to think for himself without pushing too hard for success to ruin his own health.  Tolerance and compassion are truly the virtues to associate with other human beings in society.

In May 2001, newspapers reported that twenty-five percent of BC students could not complete their high school. In 2002, there were 31 youngsters, who had committed suicide in BC. A school counsellor in Surrey, BC claimed that over fifty per cent of high school students had talked about committing suicide. Of course, the suicide thought comes first from avoiding peer pressure in school or the abuse at home; then from a hopeless future of unemployment and the loss of self-esteem.

Yet, I believe perfectionists have more stress than normal people have. The top French chef Bernard L’Oiseau was more well known than the French president to his people, had a charming wife, two lovely children, and thirteen restaurants in France. Yet he had committed suicide in a hotel after his restaurants being ranked not so well as he expected by a gourmet magazine in 2003.  He was so humiliated by such ranking system that he didn’t want to live any more.  He forgot life is not a competition but the joy of serving family, friends and society: none needs to be the number one to be happy.  After all, number one can’t serve all the people or customers on earth. At least I can’t afford to enter a three-star French restaurant, paying $175 to have a meal and prefer the one without star or just a simple drive-in restaurant. Therefore, parents and teachers shouldn't push for higher and higher achievements in students because a genius needs a break with time for communication, sports and fun too. Having friends is very important for students as a survival technique.  Developing personal interest for a job is also better than academic success or being the number one in any field.

Francis is a ten-year-old boy living next door to Carmela. His mother complained that he refused to read books beyond his own textbooks. Besides, his grammar and spelling were poor.  He couldn’t follow agenda to work at school.  Yet, Carmela discovers he is very smart, typing his composition on computer. Besides, learning from his older brother, he knows how to get onto Internet to play games and does research work.  He knows even the names of the human organs, asking Carmela about the cause of sicknesses and the healing power: how he could get rid of numbness in his leg.

Carmela told the boy that deficiency of vitamin B6 causes numbness of the nerves.  So he should eat sunflower seeds rich in vitamin B6.  He looked pale simply because he didn’t exercise, playing too much computer games.  Thus, his body didn’t warm up that he has caught cold easily.  She taught him to rub his chest to help blood circulation whenever he had difficulty in breathing. Besides, she advised him to eat oranges and tomatoes, which are rich in vitamin C that fights cold viruses.

Francis had drawn aliens for school assignment, believing in existence of aliens and ghosts. Carmela asked whether it would be fair for ghosts without any physical bodies or would it be fair for human beings to have different ages - being some old and some young?
The boy answered, "I find the variety of shapes and ages like mountains and rivers making the world actually more interesting than having one shape and same age for all plants and animals, human beings and ghosts."

"What is the purpose of God making you a child and not a ghost who doesn't suffer hunger at all?  Would it be interesting to make you feel hungry?"
   Francis couldn't answer.

"You must think hard.  Often you have an instinct of knowing something being good or bad because God is in everybody's conscience giving advice and warning.  So, ask your heart now why you should be a child and not a ghost."

“I have learnt cooking and enjoy it.  I suppose I am here on earth learning to be a man, working like my parents.  Without hunger, life may be boring for a ghost without any reason to work or study.”

Certainly understanding is developed from feeling and experience: knowledge of cooking doesn’t make any sense to a ghost or a computer that doesn’t understand the happiness of achievement even after possessing all the knowledge on earth. Learning is indeed the second stage of development in all creatures after being born. Like a mother, the conscience may tell a child a thousand times to do something but the child may ignore it until being questioned by the third party of what had his conscience told him to do. Therefore, adults must teach children listening to their inner voice to get ideas or help particularly in examinations.  Memory can be recalled instantly from feelings.

One day, Francis came with a novel to read and Carmela asked him to tell her the story.  It was an adventurous story about a youth wanting to have a show-dog that was beyond his mean to buy.
Carmela said, “You may love sunshine but you can never possess the sun, so I want you to write an ending of this story, expressing friendship between the dog and the boy without possessive mind."
Francis argued, "My brother told me that the show-dog owner had later given it to the boy."
Carmela replied firmly,  "How would you like your friends possessing you and keeping you away from home? Likewise, you can't possess a person, a pet or a thing that doesn’t belong to you. Therefore, I want you to write about gracious love without dominance or possessive mind. You must respect other persons’ right and property as well as their freedom like your own.”

Consequently, Francis wrote about the youth taking the lost dog back to its owner.  He was employed then as its trainer.  Few months later, the master wanted to give the dog to the youth but he couldn’t afford to raise it.  So he decided to keep his job there, sharing the love of the dog with its master rather than taking it home to be starved.
“Well, Francis, you can write an alternative story after reading a book to become a better writer than the writer himself. You are a very smart boy.  Love means sharing and serving with respect without any possessive thought.”

While Francis was reading his next book, Carmela wanted him to tell her the author’s purpose of writing it.

“This book is dedicated to a boy but I don’t know his purpose of writing it.”
“Francis, from what the author had wanted to say to the boy, it leads to the characters and the setting of the place in the beginning of the book.
“Next came the reason of speaking something to the boy. As your friend had done something foolish, you had to tell him about it.  This became the reason of your saying something to him and what you had said to him.
“Finally, how to deliver a message without hurting your best friend’s feeling is the art of speaking or writing.  So for each book you have read, you must answer the six questions of who, where, when, why, what and how the author has spoken through the main characters."

“It began with a boy, Albert, waking up from coma in hospital. The physician tried to make him remember what had happened to him, asking his name and address repeatedly. He finally remembered he and his friend Victor had tried to avoid the bullies at school.  Then came Miranda who wanted them to join her soccer team playing against the bullies. They refused. However, a tiny alien wanted Albert to participate the game.  So he joined the team and ended up winning the game.”

“Good, this must be a story encouraging the boy to face the bullies without running away. Sometimes, people need some encouragement to conquer their fear.  Well, what had happened next?  How did Albert get into coma in hospital?"
“It was an accident.  He had discovered some footprints in his yard and he felt that he had been spied upon. He followed the footprints out into street and found being followed by a car over a bridge. So he ran. When the car caught up and passed by his side, he discovered the driver being an old lady.  Unknowingly, he had then tripped over a stone and felt into river.  Meanwhile, a girl among the bullies who was spying around, had saved him.”

“I see: the bully who had spied upon Albert and frightened him had become his savior. You truly can’t judge people being your enemies or friends until you know them better, giving them a chance to talk and be useful. Sometimes, a bad person may desire having good persons as friends. Then, in emergency, people act in humanity, saving all the victims likewise whether they are friends or enemies as words of God are carved in the heart of every living creature. People must conquer their suspicious mind against others by trusting God, who wants enemies to be friends and He helps us to build up friendship in many ways.  Anyway, through reading, you can be smart, knowing much more than I do.  You can remember everything after reading a book just once and would have no problem in examinations if you know the purpose of each chapter. To recall details of a story, you need to remember just the keywords such as Albert and the alien, Miranda and the bully.”

Everybody can read a book.  But knowing the meaning of the story is still difficult for a child who doesn’t understand the importance of a setting leading to the story and the six questions of who, when, where, why, what and how.  That is parent’s role to chat about books with children, getting the chance to talk about morality without per-sonal judgment upon a child.

To boost children's self-esteem, we must teach them respect comes neither from employees to authority nor from children to parents but from both sides with good manners to be cooperative in society.  To develop children’s talents, we can encourage them to start a project or small enterprises such as selling home-made handicrafts or home-grown plants, giving them not only self-esteem but also courage to face the adult world without time for drug abuse. Helping children to set a goal in life also gives them a purpose for living, developing their positive attitude to be forever active and happy.

7  --  WILL POWER

According to preachers, heaven and hell have the same environment with a long table covered with marvellous food. People there would have short arms but extra long forearms that nobody's hands can reach his own mouth.  Since the people in heaven feed their neighbours kindly, they become all well fed. On the contrary, a selfish person feeding just himself will go starving forever among his own kind of people.  So, it is personal character that puts oneself into heaven or hell.

However, on earth, a family has in fact all kinds of characters sitting together.  In a charity fund-raising dinner party for a clinic in Africa run by Bert's nephew, Jonathan, as president who has never charged Bert a penny for a decade of dental services, still Bert didn't buy his dinner ticket that was secretly paid by Carmela.  Neither would he buy any raffle tickets sold by his grandsons there as volunteers.  He sat five seats away from Carmela at the same dining table with strangers around.  There were envelopes for donation on the table. Without expecting Carmela carrying a pen at all, he cunningly asked her for a pen to write his donation. When she provided him one, he mocked sarcastically why hadn't she made a donation for him.  He kept on pestering her in public when she replied that he should do his own share. Then at home, Carmela told him never to yell at her in public what to do again. She had already donated $150 that night before he said a word.  Like being robbed and stabbed by a knife, Bert growled complaining about the food there being poor: he would never go to a fund-raising party again.

Earning eighty thousand dollars a year didn't stop Bert from squeezing from poor colleagues, relatives, friends and wife with a thousand excuses. Once an unemployed friend came to help him building a new sundeck without charge, he still shamelessly asked the poor man in giving him nails for saving his cost instead of buying a box of nails to give the left over to his friend after completing the work. Carmela made mostly her furniture and clothing since Bert's income was absolutely his very own to be kept in his bank account while taking her income to pay off their mortgage in ten years.  Now, his greedy heart still regards Carmela’s old age security as his! I find this quite amusing, Jesus has probably sent his whole household out to surround that lost sheep - Bert.

In Bert's 5-bedroom house of some two thousand square feet, there were only two double beds and one twin bed. He strongly objected buying a queen size bed for visitors so as to eliminating them from staying in his house.  He claimed there was no room in his house for another bed; to prove his point of having limited space, he even threatened to sell the house to move into an apartment. Carmela answered, “Good.  Would you pay $300 apartment maintenance expense a month?”  That keeps him quiet because the maintenance of his house has cost much less: just $300 for a few gallons of paint every five years.
Bert's sons bought him a car of his choice, still he asked for the most expensive golf equipment that had cost five times more than a bed. He is a man that spends others’ money freely but scolds his wife for buying useless gifts for hosts whenever they spend a week vacation in her relatives’ house and questioned her like criminal when she made a long distance call to siblings and cousins.

Back in 1997, Carmela was fed up with Bert's financial control treating her like a little girl, she finally left him for independence.  However, she was stopped by the American custom at the airport because she bought a one way ticket to California, planning to take a bus from Santiago to Mexico teaching English. The American custom officer was afraid that Carmela might become an illegal immigrant in the States. He immediately phoned Bert to pick up his wife at the airport.  To stop his wife from leaving him, Bert forced Carmela to take sleeping pills.  When she refused, he challenged her going with him to mental clinic for a check up in proving her sanity. Bert told the psychiatrist that Carmela tried to run away. He had contributed forty thousand dollars into her retirement savings plan. If she withdrew that money, he had to pay two hundred thousand dollars income tax for the money withdrawn. (Ah! What an exaggeration of calculation in a contribution of forty years and not one year!  Besides, that was simply for his tax advantage without benefitting her anything.)  He claimed his senseless wife had emotional problem and should be put into mental hospital, otherwise, watching her at home he could no longer earn a living.  He had completely forgotten his wife had never envied other's property that she had generously transferred her condominium to his name upon receiving it from her married daughter who had left the country without selling it.

The psychiatrist called in a psychiatric nurse from a mental hospital interviewing Carmela to get a second opinion. Having talked to the nurse first, Bert drove home alone, lying to his wife that he was just going out to feed the car park meter.

Carmela told the nurse honestly that Bert had once put her into mental institute a month in 1968 to remove her memory with electric shock treatments just because she had left him to return to her father's house after he had abused her. She expected the nurse, a woman, would have compassion for her misfortune.  However, the psychiatric nurse laughed merrily, dancing out of the room to call in an ambulance taking Carmela to mental hospital. The two paramedics treated Carmela as criminal, warning her that an attempt to escape would make policemen coming after her.  What a humiliation!

The hospital psychiatrist who had found nothing wrong with Carmela had signed her out within three days. Yet, the psychiatric nurse, who had admitted Carmela there, wanted to keep the ward busy since the hospital had less than twenty patients. She would not let Carmela out but transferred her into a long-term care unit, costing the government about a thousand dollars a day.  What a way of misusing the public healthcare system! Anyway, the hospital had even paid a few volunteers there to be guinea-pigs for testing side effects of new drug on people.  Why should the nurse let a fish in the net set free until Uncle Ted made a lawyer taking the hospital to court?

Since Canadian law allows doctors and psychiatrists to detain anyone considering dangerous to others or oneself for a three-day observation in mental hospital without any proof of insanity, a Canadian housewife had ended up admitting twice into mental hospital for disagreeing with her husband. How do we explain to such victims or prisoners that there is no physical heaven or hell as the Pope says because heaven is something spiritual with the presence of God that gives men courage and wisdom while hell is an absence of God?

Apparently, the joy of receiving God's guidance is to be absolutely fearless of all obstacles in life. Carmela said that having faith in God, people expect obstacles to be there for conquest like Joseph who had become an Egyptian Prime Minister even after being sold as slave and turned into a prisoner. So peace in one's own heart has nothing to do with personal environment or others’ opinions. The Bible tells us that Prophet Daniel and his two friends could stay calm after King Nebuchadnezzar threw them into a burning furnace. An angel was with them. Thus, Carmela found patients as new friends in the mental hospital.

Two young men told Carmela that they came in voluntarily for taking new drug to see the side effects.  One of them read her the Bible and sang to her; the other made her read his poem to give him her opinion. A Chinese woman in her fifties was put in there for speaking too loud while her husband had a mistress.  Then a young Japanese woman came in because she had insufficient breast milk to feed her newly born baby.  A First Nation woman came in under police protection as a witness in a court case. What a mixture of people were there in the mental hospital without mentally sick except those who had been influenced by tranquillizers for months to walk stiffly like mummies!

With fight and resistance or even a loud voice, a wife would probably be labelled with insanity to be locked away for a long time. People can't fight violence with violence but wisdom. Heaven exists even in hell where a righteous person lives, or hell will vanish at the presence of a righteous person. With righteousness in heart, one can turn even former enemies into friends as Prophet Daniel with his king and Joseph with his half-brothers. It is not with power but righteousness and understanding that can reign the world. Suppression doesn't work at all.  Only kindness can win a heart.

I wonder why a charming and intelligent woman like Carmela would marry a savage and stupid man like Bert whose manners and tastes she despised.  Yes, savage is he because he used a heavy crowbar to scrap the old paint of his garage. His neighbour, Francis's father, rushed in to use a small, 6-inch scraper to do the job for him. However, hundred of marks like the scratches of bear claws had already been left permanently on the wooden boards.

Ah!  He had indeed marked all his electronic equipment with white paint written with his name and address in one-inch letters that no one would ever want his stuff. He also put thick, black grease on window tracks after Carmela cleaning them. When she protested, he claimed that her sense of cleanliness being impractical in opening the windows. Yet, he had already put a bar with screw on each track to stop a window from opening wider than six inches. Is that practical in opening the windows or in preventing any break-in?  A thief can always use a utility knife to cut the glass and remove the whole panel silently!

Bert also removed Carmela’s garden shrubs in preventing any roots growing near the underground sewer, chopping down her fruit trees and forbidding her to grow vegetables to eliminate bees and insects coming into his yard.  What a man!  Carmela thinks if one must wait for spousal approval, even feeding a bird could be stopped with charge as spreading West Nile virus.

Understanding certainly has a thousand grades from insects, fish, birds and animals to human beings.  Not even a teacher can make an elementary school child think and act like an adult or a husband as his wife.  Each species, each sex and each child has his own role and spirit to play and learn just according to personal capacity.

In Matthew 18:10, Jesus told his apostles,  “Don't despise these little ones … their angels do always behold the face of my Father, which is in heaven.”  This means children can learn from their conscience without a teacher or messiah too: God has assigned each soul a guardian angel.

Once driving on highway with his daughter, a man suddenly saw a dog on his lane.  To avoid hitting the dog, he turned his steering to roadside with his car falling down a ditch. His daughter had suffered head injury.  Later on, people questioned whether he should care for his own daughter's safety or the dog's life first.  His response was that in emergency, he had no time to think at all but to do what the instinct had led him to do. In fact, angels are guiding human instinct all the time while there is no time for reflection.

Well, even a child has some right. How long can a person let a spouse dominate at home forever – till death?  In 2002, the divorce rate in Canada is 37.6% and the number of divorce cases is 70,155 couples.

Obviously, Carmela's marriage has a purpose of her own disregarding personal environment and the way she is being treated. Indeed, how can angel find work when everybody is self-sufficient?  Carmela is simply living spiritually in a heaven of her own as missionary with will power going overseas to serve savage people because none should be idle: each person has to fulfil his duty and destiny as student or mentor on earth.

8  --  SUPPRESSED  FEELING

With a heavy heart, Mrs Jean Lee, a physician’s wife, told Carmela her life long story. One afternoon at the age of six, her father’s girlfriend, Lucille, ordered her to take a nap and then told her nine-year-old brother to sleep beside her although he had his own bedroom. After such an arrangement, Lucille started quarreling with Jean’s father in sitting room, describing graphically how he had fun making love with women.  Upon hearing those words, Philip tried it on his sister.  Jean felt ugly about the touch and stopped him.  However, being ignorant about sex, she grew up thinking her virginity had been lost.

At nineteen, Jean felt secretly in love with George.  He was a suicidal man. His father had lost his legs during the war and had committed suicide after his mother had run away with her lover. Upon his father's death, his mother returned home immediately to mourn for his father and brought him up.  Since then, George believed having sex was simply a natural need of all creatures but it was ugly.  So he had sex with women and dropped them after two months, proving to himself that his beloved mother had done nothing wrong in running away with her lover while his heart was bitter with his father’s death.  He told Jean frankly about his broken relationships with women and wondered what had kept their friendship over a year.

Jean fell into despair after learning George’s love of her virtue.  She feared the revelation of her secret to him could drive him crazy, calling her a horrible liar because it was impossible to believe a girl could lose her virginity innocently at six. She had an insight that he was still tortured much by his father’s suicide that he couldn’t truly forgive his mother for deserting his father. It was impossible for him to cope with another blow from her in shattering his faith for women’s virtue.

George took Jean to see a movie. It was about a German officer falling in love with a Jewish girl on a ship during the Second World War and they knew that they could not get married.  Thus, they drank a glass of poisonous wine to die in the arms of one another. After watching this movie, George was in such a sad mood that he climbed up a rail, attempting to jump off a bridge. Jean held him back, scolding him for making such a bad joke! He stopped immediately while in her heart, she was praying to God, promising that she would do anything for Him in exchange for George’s safety.

Two years later, George went to study in London. Before his departure, he timidly knelt before Jean on stairway, trying to propose to her.  She pretended to be angry and scolded him for making a public scene, so he got up and swallowed his words, deciding to delay his proposal after his graduation since he could hardly support his own living.

Before George obtaining his doctorate, Jean taught English in a remote African village. She dreamed of watching a funeral process by the sea and saw people whom she didn’t know at all.  She asked the mourners who was being buried.  They told her the name of the deceased.  That was just Jean herself.  Jean was quite shocked to learn about having children and grandchildren burying her.  She realized that she must get married but not with George.  Thus she told God that the man whom she would accept his proposal must be a man whom she had known over five years, coming to the remote village to visit her without saying the words of loving her.  She felt that she couldn’t love any man again and didn’t want to be loved.
It happened then a missionary doctor knowing Jean since high school days, came to visit her in that remote village, asking her to serve God with him.  Although Jean was not interested in Jacob, she accepted his hand because the three signs demanded had been fulfilled.
Then Jean wrote George that she had married Jacob because he didn’t mind that she had lost her virginity when she was six years old. George realized his own stupidity of emphasizing on Jean’s virtue without letting her know he simply loved her for what she was.  A decade later, he married his faithful secretary without having any children with her while wishing loud to be the father of Jean’s daughter.  That made Jean feel guilty of breaking his heart.

Hopelessly, Jean said to Carmela, “Several times, I dreamed of being in London without courage to pick up a phone to call George to meet me at all as I would normally do to other friends.  Why can’t I call him up likewise?”
“You didn’t dare doing that in your dreams?”
“Yes!  I couldn’t do that even in my dreams and I can’t do it in reality. Is there something wrong with me in meeting him again?"
"No; but you may be afraid of falling in love once more without any result but hurting the feeling of your spouse."

"Indeed, I have such fear. Thus, George and I send one another Christmas greetings and birthday cards once a year.  I pick up a pen and end up sending him only a signature or the picture of my children and grandchildren. Yet, I must tell my secret to someone, a stranger like you because the feeling within is pressing so hard on my chest.  I can't carry it into my grave.”

"What would you like to tell him?"
"He is a frustrated man wanting to meet me and had suggested several times where we might meet in his conferences overseas.  I want to tell him that he is always a special friend to me and friendship will last forever with mutual respect but marriages often end up in disagreement, having one third of them ended up in divorce.”

"You are absolutely right! So, you have no reason to be afraid of seeing him again. Many people face mid-life crisis after menopause, unemployment and surgeries that they need spiritual support like friendship and communication. The recurring dreams may be persuading you to communicate with him until you have the courage to do so.  We are here on earth to appreciate all the creatures God has created for us to love without possessive thought. Marriage is sometimes a disguised word of control and killing.  I prefer the word of friendship offering loved ones freedom and services. Truly, Jesus says in Matthew 22:30 that there is no marriage in heaven after our resurrection. This will solve all the worries and problems of jealousy.  You have to give yourself the right to love whom you love and to do whatever you want to do as long as you observe the Ten Commandments because the world and all the creatures within are for you to love and serve.”

Everybody has some suppressed feeling since family abuse has a thousand kinds.  In California, a famous case was a boy named Dave.  After growing up, he talked on television how he was badly treated by his own mother since the age of four.  She had often starved him that he had to eat what he could find in garbage cans of school lunchroom.  Still his mother forced him to vomit the food out.  His father and siblings ignored the abuse and teachers thought that he was a bad boy hurting and bruising himself with negligence.  Until the age of twelve, no one realized that he had been constantly beaten and cruelly punished by his mother. Although Dave had forgiven his mother, he had to talk about his feeling in public, letting the world beware of family abuse.

Obviously, drunkards and gamblers often beat their wives that can be seen physically. Yet, my wonderful father never drinks or smokes; being a serious surgeon, he still got mad and yelled at me simply because Grandma Esther handed me the first piece of a cut cake.  He claimed that I should take the last one. Esther knew that I was the scapegoat for Dad to project his anger on me while longing for his mother’s special attention.  Yet, he is my jealous mom’s puppet that wouldn’t even invite the lonely Grandma home for Christmas and Esther wouldn’t dare to show Dad any affection in front of my mom who is best in emotionally abusing us.

Mom was hostile against Esther even when our dog greeted the latter happily: Esther was found having too much influence in family and must be disapproved in every way whenever she spoke to us. Coming from a poor family without even a dress to wear in her teenage but old clothing handing down from her brother, Mom hated even her own mother being a housewife and her aging granny taken up her mom's time.  Yet, Mom is now a housewife and the chief fundraiser for a small clinic in Mexico. Ironically, we were forbidden to date the poor! Why there are such double standards and double talks on earth?  Perhaps Mom is still haunted by the poverty of her childhood in spite of Dad’s good income as surgeon nowadays.

One evening after going to party, my brother drove his date to our house. To stop my brother driving his girlfriend home afterwards, Mom simply used a baseball bat to break his car window so that he couldn't drive his girlfriend home! Mom also looked into my address book, phoning all my friends that they were not allowed to date me. Although everybody tries to maintain peace with Mom in silence, how would any empress appreciate having peace with her subjects or is she simply over worried about our safety without any confidence or trust in us?

My friend’s bad temper landlady often beat her five-year-old daughter and once she even pushed the poor girl tumbling down the stairs while quarrelling with her husband.  Another woman beat her son severely, making him cry painfully for her ex-husband to listen on the phone, punishing the man for a late payment of child support. One divorced woman beat her son to bleeding after losing money in gambling.

At teenage with family migrated to Singapore, Grandma Esther lived next door to Carmela's sick mother, Mrs Main, witnessing Aunt Daisy told the 2-year-old Andy to bring the sick Mrs Main his urine as medicine to drink. After drinking unknowingly a mouthful of it, Mrs Main threw the bowl away with a loud scream, frightened her son out of her room. When the isolated mother died of heart attack, Daisy also isolated Mr Main’s children immediately by discharging their servants and cook to be replaced with new ones under her command, telling them to call herself Mrs Main instead of Mrs Chung. When Mr Main married someone else afterward, she took all his children away, but her shipwreck forced her to take them back to depend on him for a living.

Carmela’s father, Mr Right Main, had a prosperous bicycle factory. Daisy was formerly a teller before she came to live in his house to be his bookkeeper in charge of paying all the expenses and salaries of his factory workers and household servants.  She put his money in a big wooden chest at home.  In such wealth, Daisy still refused to give some yarn for Carmela’s school assignment. So Carmela used old strings tied together to knit and finish her project. Discovering Carmela’s work, Daisy torn it apart, screaming: “How evil and ungrateful you are: judging me for not giving you yarn for the work despite my telling you that you’re much younger than your classmates and should be exempted from doing it!”
Why didn’t Daisy go and tell Carmela’s teacher directly? Why she put Carmela into a class of students older than her age?  Wasn't that a clever and wicked way to make an innocent child fail in school and be punished by teacher in public?

Daisy was a big gambler too.  She lost all Mr Right Main’s money in gambling within two years in power that his factory workers didn’t get paid, so his manager borrowed money from friends to take over his factory.

Reasoning with people like Daisy and Dave’s mother would simply promote more danger unto helpless victims and have the witnesses removed or killed. So Mr Right Main had played along with Daisy’s game in accepting her as his children’s guardian while in front of Carmela, he named Daisy the Butcher. People should simply beware of such power grabbing and blood thirsty Images walking in their neighbourhood. For suppressed victims, they should leave home as early as possible while they can.

9 --  SELF  INFLICTED  PAIN

The challenges of unemployment, sicknesses and aging make people creative and compassionate to their fellowmen.  Thus, the discharged logging elephants with their trainers in Asia have now turned into artistic painters to earn their living, selling paintings to tourists shown on Canadian television. Unexpected success often comes out of adversity brightening up human spirit. Cancer patients in America look for spiritual salvation and their own support groups to express personal feelings. In the past, earning money busily in good health, they couldn’t find time for love and communication. Getting close to death makes them recognize time being precious and money had little meaning that they have started putting children, family and communication first.  People can definitely learn from their mistakes as researchers can learn from all kinds of patients the causes of sicknesses.

Yet, what is the use of communication when people can hardly chat with spouse or children?  This is an art to learn. Communication can’t exist in caste system between master and slave such as Moses and the Pharaoh or a couple like Bert and Carmela. It exists well among strangers that have no conflict of interest.

Alice invited Carmela to stay four days with her in a lodge to get naturopathic counseling, yoga exercise, morning walk and relaxation with facial, feet, and body massage. What Carmela loved most was the yoga exercise.  It trains people to breathe with the nose, using the mind to direct oxygen going to the toes, fingertips or desired area to break through any blockade in blood stream.  Besides, people learn sitting straight properly in eliminating back pain and to relax in removing stress, the cause of many sicknesses.

The lodge is like youth hostel. The guests there are mostly women taking a break from the hectic family life and work, looking for a change in their life style and future. The dining room has six round tables to serve about fifty guests in buffet style without reserved seats. A guest may choose any seat and chat freely with others.  The food served is strictly vegetarian diet.  Many are repeated guests staying a week or two there.

One evening after dinner, Carmela saw Annamaria sitting alone in the lounge and went over there to say hello to that lonely, old lady with an afflicted soul.  Annamaria asked whether Carmela had visited the astrologer in the house that could read the past traumas of people quite accurately.

Carmela replied,  “No.  Although astrology comes from God, He also tells us in the Bible that we should not consult fortunetellers because such power may be misused as students reading the examination papers in advance, they won’t bother to study attentively any more, leading to their failure in life afterward. Anyway, I don't need to know my fate in advance that might scare me off any adversity.  I prefer to let God lead me through all the examinations in life by constantly listening to the inner voice of my heart. I had gone through many tragedies in peace and in safety as during a shipwreck, rescue came naturally without even time for me to think of the danger at all.  Everybody is God's child.  It is a pleasure and pride to triumph over adversities with God's daily guidance step by step to reach for higher understanding.
“God educates everybody in conscience what to do since the day one was born.  If He wants us to know something in advance, He would send us a prophet without us paying for it. When I was a little girl, my cousin invited a blind fortuneteller into our house to read our fortune.  I was told that I would go overseas and meet noble people. I had never put that in my mind.  But today, I suddenly realize that the prophecy had come true: I did receive scholarship overseas to study.  God has His own timing where He would send me to study.  Miracle calls one after another that can’t be arranged by myself.  Life is a miracle in itself to meet so many wonderful people on earth.”

Annamaria said, “I am Protestant but I believe no longer in Jesus Christ's resurrection.  Do you believe in his resurrection?”
Carmela answered, “It doesn't matter to me whether he has resurrected or his ghost has come back into life.  I can't know everything.  I simply believe in God's existence and His Ten Commandments written in every religion and every human heart: yours and mine.  I can't be all known like God.  I can only seek the truth like a kindergarten child.”

“I think all men are equal.”
“A fox and a rabbit are equal in the eyes of God as a living creature learning to survive in a different way; they can't be equal in intelligence and character just as a child can't behave like grandparent.  We can't expect people to be the same.  My children are free to make their own decisions: that's my promise to God before they were born: I’ll not command them to do my will but to follow His will written in their own conscience. We are in different grades with different duties to perform.  So we must accept the differences among us to live in peace as God's children.  Like the fish of different species in oceans, God has created us all in different forms and sizes.  Each person should be content to be himself or herself without being someone else.  If we fight among ourselves due to our differences, it will give God headache.”

   “I believe only in truth.”
“Yes, truth includes many facts different in the minds and eyes of a variety of species and characters.  For example, you are sitting at home to look outside telling people the truth of what you have seen; the bird in the sky looking at your roof is also telling people what it has seen; likewise, the ant under your floor is telling people what it has seen.  Yet, there comes the tax collector appraising the value of your house inside and out disregarding the purchasing prices. So, the truth is different from person to person. A wise man will know that all of you are speaking the truth of what you know, and it takes different views to know the whole truth of the scenery of your house.  A personal view is just part of the truth with nobody ever lying.  Even a thief would like to speak the truth if there is no judgment in advance.”

“That’s right.  I want to tell you a story.  When I was nineteen.  A man had come and built a beautiful house in my father’s farm.  I didn’t know much about love but admired his ability. So, I married him. Then one day, he came home with a friend, who was two years younger than I was. We fell in love at first sight. It was not planned at all and I couldn’t control that feeling of love, which I had never felt before in my life or afterward with any other man. Anyway, I had remained faithful to my husband although the inner feeling of love toward that man could never go away.”

“I know that feeling of love which makes people do silly things unconsciously. My sister is crazy about Elvis Presley.  She is still collecting his pictures although he had passed away a few decades without ever knowing her existence.”
“Yes, it is impossible to forget a lover even after several decades no matter how hard I had tried to be faithful to my husband. After the Second World War, my husband became a successful builder.  He divorced me and married another girl twenty years younger than himself.  I regretted being faithful to him for nothing.  Since my lover had already married another woman, I also married another man.  After my second husband passed away a decade ago, I had cancer surgery and recovered from it.  So I truly believe in God and miracles, which helped me recovering from traumas.  Yet, two years ago, my lover’s wife passed away.  Unexpectedly, he asked me to marry him and came to visit me from the East Coast.  I am already 89 years old.  I don’t want to marry again.”

Annamaria looks healthy and twenty years younger than her age. Indeed, Carmela admires the old lady’s elegance and beauty.  It can’t be a surprise that Annamaria’s old lover is still charmed by her.
“Wow, what a long time you two have loved one another. I wouldn’t say no to such a marriage proposal!”
“I don’t like to be told what to do.”
Carmela decided that it was late and she should retire joining Alice in her room.
Annamaria pleaded, “Can you stay a while longer?  I want to tell you something.  Last year, the astrologer predicted that I would return here to solve a problem. Yet, I am leaving tomorrow without solving it.  My doctor knows why I am so angry with my best friend.  When my lover came to visit me, I took him out with my roommate.  She knows the city much better than I do because I came from a farm and she was born there in the city.  Although she could explain things much better than I do, she shouldn’t simply take him for herself ignoring my existence. I told my best friend that we could no longer live together.  I have moved out of the apartment we had shared.  Now I am living by myself.  I am an independent person and enjoy living by myself, but I can’t get rid of the anger in my heart.”

Carmela explained, “Even husband and wife can't control one another's mind as your first husband couldn't control your heart in loving his friend at first sight. True love simply can't be separated by distance or destroyed by scandal.  People have to let go of jealousy and possessive mind in order to retain love forever in heart and peace at home.  Furthermore, our love to mankind also senses the pain of others that has drawn me coming forward to chat with you, leaving my roommate Alice behind for a moment. Lending an ear politely to somebody doesn't mean falling in love sexually. So, you have to forgive your friends’ negligence in letting you out of their conversation during the day trip to city. Then your trouble of losing your best friend and a lover will be gone. You will regain their friendship by giving them their freedom of expression gracefully at your present.”

“I don't know whether I can do that.”
“You can certainly do it because you believe in truth that these two persons have been your best friends for decades. You can't hate them simply because they had expressed themselves, their true characters of enjoying chatting with one another on a city tour with you.  Although God is different from us, He still lets us speak up our minds whenever we want.  Therefore, you must let your friends speak up their minds without censoring their speech.  Then you can feel good about your grace in giving people freedom of expression at your present instead of behind your back.”

“Well, you are so wise to see things from different angles, thinking that there was nothing wrong with the behaviour of chatting excluding me for a while and I was not being betrayed by their openness!  Since nobody has betrayed my faith and trust, I can't be angry again.”

Certainly, human character can easily be changed due to their understanding in removing jealousy and pride to gain eternal happiness. The will power of dominating over a spouse as puppet is often a self-inflicted wound to cause high blood pressure and anger. Knowing the truth with understanding will definitely set a person free from depression that can't be healed by medicine or physician.

I find a dominant person with lust most dangerous because it can lead to murder as a young American mother, S. Smith, having affair with her boss, rushed to divorce her husband in 1994. Still her boss refused to marry her because she had two small children. Thus she pushed her car with children into a lake, drowning them and made a false report of her car being stolen. When the truth was discovered, she was sentenced into prison for thirty years.  I begin to wonder what can set a person's desire, shamefulness and anger free?

Soul mates with good will lasting forever are inseparable by adversity or time and distance. Power and lust simply draw conflicts, destroying personal character without ever knowing the truth from the tongues of slaves, who must hide their feelings with hatred sparkling in their eyes. So, a person should always set oneself free from lust and power, live to love and to serve others in mutual respect. An abusive person can never set herself free until she sets others free as Annamaria did.  Then love will be like sunshine giving life to environment reflected everywhere.

10  -- VICTIMS'  REACTIONS

Granduncle Bill has got frequent nightmares of being lost, so is his heart. He feels like a slave to his wife, Connie. Before immigrating to Canada, he was a wealthy and respectable manager in a foreign firm in Taiwan where Connie worked as typist. However, in Vancouver, Canada, he worked as labourer, machinist to support his family. Connie, who could hardly speak English, stayed home as housewife, living in a brand new 3-bedroom house with high basement. Connie made him finish the full basement for her.  Yet, three years later, that house was no longer good enough for a woman of vanity like Connie who made him buy a bigger house with a large sundeck on a double size corner lot for showing off their wealth. That gave Bill a lot of gardening work, which he didn't want to do. Again, Connie made him convert the sundeck into a family room and finish the basement as recreation room besides buying her a duplex in addition to their first house for rent as her income. Thus, Bill must work around the clock as carpenter, gardener, and apartment manager besides the full-time work of a mechanic.

However, what does wealth mean?  Bill's intelligent daughter with a doctorate doing gene research in California doesn't want to be seen with her parents that she didn't allow them to attend her graduation ceremony and has never returned home for a visit in a decade.  It sounds awful.  Bill tried to comfort himself that having a heartless daughter is nothing to compare with the pain of having a child dying of cancer or put into mental institute.

Woodlands Institute had become the headline news in BC on April 14, 2001.  Once considered as a safe haven for the mentally disabled from 1950 to 1996, the institute had numerous allegations of staff members assaulting residents sexually and physically.  Thus, for shower, residents were lined up naked in hallways, hit with wooden bristle brush on head to keep moving into the shower room.

In the seventies, scientists discovered that estrogen, used in preventing women's miscarriage after the Second World War, being the agent causing the development of cancer during puberty of those women's children. Still, it is advertised as being good for arthritis. Yet, estrogen, injected into laboratory mice, has caused the development of Parkinson's disease. In insecticides, estrogen is used for ruining the nervous system of insects to cause their brain death. The post-menopausal women, who had taken estrogen for a decade or more, have a death rate of cancer 1.6 times that of the non-users. Ovarian cancer is killing about 14,000 American women annually. Likewise, the hormone, rBGH, injected to cows for them to produce twenty times more milk than normal, may be dangerous to human health as cattle fed with internal organs causing mad cow disease.  It is also reported that eighty per cent of the antibiotic doesn't work and sometimes it may be harmful to certain type of people.

An American lady researcher in Mexico has discovered that the seven-year-old children, after exposing to pesticides in farms for years, have brains like those of three years old.  Both their memories and co-ordination are poor.  Another researcher has also discovered these seven-year-old girls have breasts developed like the twelve-year-old.  Furthermore, a researcher in Florida has discovered young male alligators, exposed to water contaminated with pesticide residues, have unusual small sex organs with bodies also much smaller in size than female alligators.  Therefore, people should beware of their food and drugs.

Disclosure reported on television that DIANE-35, advertised as acne remedy is very popular among youths, prescribed by physicians as birth control pills.  However, it had caused severe blood clot leading to death of some users.  The problem lies then on quantity taken just as excessive of protein eaten would cause kidney problem and excessive minerals taken would poison the liver.

In 2002, Saskatchewan, normal babies and tots receiving multiple vaccines such as DPT (for whooping cough) and MMR (for measles) are found developing autism one in 333 children.
The MMR chemicals have triggered mercury poisoning in DPT and should never be given within six to twelve months after a shot of DPT. In California, there are about 400 autism cases registered every three months.  Yet, American law doesn't allow children without vaccination entering public schools, offering parents little choice of rejecting the risk in vaccination of healthy one-month old babies.  Thus, everybody on earth may find oneself a victim either of this or that, hearing the words of both victims and offenders a million times in their lifetime.

What are the differences of selling drugs in streets to the killing in slaughterhouse or battlefield?  Men do kill in the name of protecting animals from overpopulation to preventing their starvation or spreading disease among themselves.  Every killing has an honourable name.  For years, Bill had gone hunting on some weekends in order to get away from Connie. But then his terrible nightmares made him come to see my grandma, telling Esther that he felt lost in his dreams.

Esther exclaimed,  “Lost!  Nobody can be lost in universe.  There are people to welcome immigrants, hotels to accommodate tourists and Human Resources to help workers looking for jobs. How can anyone be lost with prisoners having even a guard to look after their three meals a day! When someone dies, an angel will pick him up like a mother welcoming anxiously a baby to be born.  Nobody can be lost.”

Bill said hopelessly,  “I don't believe in life after death.”
“I see, it is your soul and your spirit, not your body that is lost. With all your wealth, you are very unhappy.  I thought you had enjoyed your trip to Europe recently as Connie had told me.”

Spiritually lost, Bill started wondering how he could endure to live with Connie forever. He wishes that there would be some kind of reincarnation to separate a couple afterlife.  If Bill may choose a wife again, he would choose a modest and contented woman who wouldn’t want a larger lot than she could do the gardening herself and shouldn’t live in bigger house than she can clean.  She shouldn’t turn a husband into slave, serving their estates seven days a week.  Making a long sigh, Bill confessed,
“I am the lost one, hiding from Connie in the forest!  I should have felt the pain of the deer shot but I didn't because I could only think of the joy of having no more life after death: released from running forever.  But life actually continues on after death: learning to choose either good or evil - God or the devils.  I have chosen the evil of hunting and killing to express my anger in marrying Connie. She can't dress up properly or earn a penny, yet she shows off her wealth to others.  She can hardly speak English but she sounds knowing everything to make us the laughingstock among friends and strangers!  How I would like to be dead and hide myself from being seen with her. Hasn't my daughter fast all her life to show us how to keep fit and to live in dignity and poverty without showing off wealth and knowledge lest our vulgarity be laughed at?  Now, I have arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure.  I am afraid of going blind.  I would like to give back lives to the animals I had killed.  Yet, I have no power to give life to the dead!”
Esther consoled him. “Well, everybody makes mistakes and everybody will die sooner or later.  Although you can't revive the dead, you can feed the birds in your backyard to show your respect to the lives of small creatures without putting your anger upon the harmless ones again.  Your sincere penitence can put your conscience at ease.”

Like Connie, Bert had an unpleasant tongue and would never apologize; he kept on teasing Christians preaching forgiveness of sins without the heart of doing so, acting like a time-bomb in his victims’ mind with constant verbal abuse, forcing others to swallowing insults graciously.  In the late eighties, he was sent to work at a project in Brisbane for two months with three teammates and Carmela went along to visit her cousin Jennifer. In the clients’ office, Bert often swore at his colleague and the boss could not stop the daily quarrels of his two right hand men. When Carmela learned about that, she immediately invited Bert’s three teammates home for supper every Wednesday and the quarrel stopped because of her gracious and humble service to these men that they also wanted to express kindness and gratitude in return, inviting the couple for lunch at weekends. Their boss had also took the whole team and Carmela out every Sunday for sightseeing and dinner, or meeting his Australian friends. Outing together after work had relaxed everybody. Life is definitely not for showing off wealth but offering services to fill the air with harmonious atmosphere. Since then, Bert and his teammates became good friends, going skiing or golfing together.

Now, in his retirement, Granduncle Bert has taken over the daily cooking that people find him a very good husband while Carmela wants to cook for herself.  Bert used to buy one dollar worth of dried bean curd that could last for four suppers in a row every week: this made Carmela’s stomach sick. Bert hardly ate what he had cooked for Carmela because he cooked meat and fish for himself , while giving Carmela just one overcooked vegetarian dish with all vitamins lost.

Carmela told Bert that she didn't like to eat dried bean curd, but he insisted that it was a good protein source. He kept on putting the same food on the table. The human body has thousand kinds of genes.  It requires twenty kinds of amino acids, over fifteen kinds of vitamins and fifteen kinds of minerals to produce them. People can't survive with protein alone. An average adult needs 250 grams of carbohydrates, 100 grams of fats, and just 50 to 80 grams of proteins a day according to body weigh.

There are three kinds of carbohydrates: Monosaccharides (glucose), Diasaccharides (fruit sugar) and Polysaccharides (starch). Glucose (C6H12O6) is a component of blood cells.  Upon breaking up, it gives out 38 electrons as energy.

There are two kinds of fats: Cholesterol (C27H45OH) or animal fat is saturated fat that goes through lymphatic vessels up the subclavian vein down into the heart to enter the liver through the hepatic artery.  Vegetable Oil  (C17H31COOH) is the unsaturated fat - the healthy fat that can easily be converted into energy or make into proteins.  Fat forms cell membranes with phosphorus or carries fat-soluble Vitamins A, D, E, K and minerals as side chain to form proteins of hundred kinds.

Proteins are formed with Nitrogen compounds (-NH2) linked with amino acids (COOH) and sugar as Isoleucine (C6H13NO2) or with mineral as Methionine (C5H11NO2S). There are twenty kinds of amino acids divided into essential and non-essential types for building up variety of tissues, bones, blood cells, antigens, antibodies, over 50 kinds of hormones, 50 kinds of enzymes and coenzymes.

The non-essential amino acids can be synthesized by the body or the internal bacteria from food with arginine for potency, glutamine for digestion, glycine for the liver, leucine for general growth, serine for serous fluid and taurine for bile salt.

9 Essential Amino Acids   ----------Deficiency
Histidine  (yeast / soybean)  ---------  deterioration of myelin sheath, hearing loss
Isoleucine (soybean)  --------  -  -------- -     red blood cells production reduced
Leucine ------------------------------can't stimulate insulin production
Lysine (grains, soybean)  --------------------fatigue, dizziness
Methionine (beans) &   ---------------------- liver deterioration, baldness
   Cystine (beans)  ------------------------------immunity decreased
Phenylalamine (sunflower seeds) &------clouded thought, depression
   Tyrosine (squash seeds)    ----------------paleness
Threonine (watercress, spinach) -------   liver fat increased, digestion deteriorated       Tryptophan (almond, broad bean, potato) sterility, dry skin and hair
Valine (safflower oil, pine nut, onion) - decrease co-ordination, nervousness

In general, grains have lots of protein and starch but no Vitamin A for growth and good vision that gourds like cantaloupe and butternut squash have.  Nuts, seeds, beans and mushrooms have Vitamin B-Compounds for the nervous system except B12 that can only be found in purple seaweed. All kinds of fruits, especially citrus fruits have vitamin C to keep gum and body healthy. Soymilk has Vitamin D to keep normal bone formation. Green leafs, roots and tubers have all kinds of minerals that can be safely digested. Nuts and seeds have Vitamin E as antioxidant to dilate fat in arteries and the most sought calcium for bones as well.  Calcium is also needed in extracellular fluid for transmitting nerve impulse.  In its shortage, even calcium in bone will be drawn out for nerve transmission first.

Some people are allergic to nuts that have lots of fat while kidney beans have lectin causing the aggregation of red blood cells. People certainly should learn the limit of eating certain type of food.

On the contrary, the shortage of B-compound causes stress and mental sickness. That shortage usually comes from the body unable to absorb nutrients due to the liver being destroyed by alcohol and drug. Besides, stubborn animal fat deposited in arteries can hinder the body’s autonomous system. However, exercise can reduce blood cholesterol. Except coconuts and avocado, vegetarians hardly get any cholesterol in food. Anyway, the liver can easily manufacture it from nutrients whenever it is needed.

Without sulphur in food, one has poor nails. Without zinc, one loses hair and sense of smell. Without salt, blood vessel will collapsed although too much salt would cause high blood pressure. So we can't even eat something good excessively or we may get sick.

SALT (5g/day) Sodium Chloride is split in kidney as sodium ions and chlorine ions to be reabsorbed at fixed rate by kidneys.
In plasma, the sodium content should be 0.85 percent.  High sodium content causes high blood pressure,
low one causes the collapse of blood vessels.  Potassium is found in all plant food.
Sodium ions and Potassium ions also replaces one another in and out of sinoatrial node causing the heart beat 75 times per minute.

CARBOHYDRATES  (250g/day) is Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen found abundantly in plants that doesn't taste sweet.
Monosaccharides C6H12O6      - Glucose, mainly used to form red blood cells, can be used as energy giving out 38 electrons.
Diasaccharides -----C12H22O11  - Fructose can give out more energy than glucose.
Polysaccharides  C6H10O5     - Starch coming from grains and beans fills the stomach.
Digestible fibers with sulfur is constituent for the growth of hair and nails, bones and tissues.
Indigestible fibers can prevent colon cancer.   Fiber binding with bile can lower the blood cholesterol.

CHOLESTEROL C27H45OH - Saturated Animal Fat that goes through lymphatic vessels up to the shoulder
the subclavian vein, getting into the heart to the liver through the hepatic artery.  So it may leave some fat
as plaques in the heart to cause blockage.
OIL C17H31COOH (100g/day) -- Mono- and Polyunsaturated FAT are vegetable or seed oil, absorbed with
protein from the small intestine to the liver through the portal vein. Oil forms cell membranes with phosphorus
as phospholipids or carries fat-soluble Vitamins A, D, E, K and minerals as side chain to form proteins of
hundred kinds.

PROTEINS are formed with Nitrogen compounds (-NH2) linked with amino acids (COOH) and sugar as
Isoleucine (C6H13NO2) or linked with oil with vitamins and mineral attached as Methionine (C5H11NO2S).
50-80grams proteins a day builds up variety of tissues, blood, antibodies, 100 kinds of hormones, enzymes
and coenzymes.

9 Essential Amino Acids---Sources          --    --  Usage.......................................................................Deficiency
Histidine           semi-essential      yeast, bean sprout --------constituent of nerve sheath       deterioration of myelin sheath, hearing loss
Isoleucine ------C6H13NO2       soybean  ------------------produces simple acids                        red blood cells production reduced
Leucine ---------C6H13NO2--- brown rice, soybean -----stimulates insulin production --------------------------- high blood sugar level
Lysine---------  -C6H14N2O2     grains ----------------------regulates Calcium absorption                   -                         fatigue, dizziness
Methionine -----C5H11NO2S    nuts, beans, legumes ---- for metabolism & growth                                    liver deterioration, baldness
Phenylalamine C9H11NO2       sunflower seeds, beans -  for mental alertness                               -         clouded thought, depression
Threonine ------C4H9NO3         green leafy vegetable ----controls fat, produces elastin & enamel proteins    -     digestion deteriorated
Tryptophan-- --C11H12N2O2   nuts, seaweed, beans ----component of casein and other proteins                 sterility, dry skin and hair
Valine -------- -- C5H11NO2       safflower oil, onion ------- -constituent of many proteins                 decrease coordination, nervousness

Fortunately, each fruit contains a few essential proteins.  The mixture of various types of food from
vegetable roots to fruits and grains can offer people enough vitamins and minerals safely without taking pills
that may cause toxic side effects.

EXCESSIVE PROTEINS
Cystine kidney stones come from the renal tubular having absorbed 4 proteins in high concentration:
Argine, Cystine, Lysine and Ornithine.
Lectin in red kidney beans and ricin in castor beans cause red blood cells sticking together.
Pungent favour food such as radish inhibits iodine absorption to cause goiter.

1. Water  as plasma for intracellular and extracellular fluids has potassium and sodium controlling the blood pressure.
----------------------------- Water, sodium and potassium are found in juicy fruit and gourd.
  2. Red Blood Cells from simple carbohydrates called blood sugar linked with iron carry oxygen to body cells.
........................................The pancreas controls the blood sugar level.
  3. Blood clot platelets are made of Vitamin K in vegetable fiber.
  4. Lymph -  Antigens and antibodies are found in fruit seeds and spices such as garlic, ginger and bitter almond.
  5. Energy  is carbohydrates coming from starch such as grains, nuts, and tubers (wheat, rice and potatoes).
----------------------------- Liver stores one day of energy supply and lots of nutrients for protein synthesis.
  6. Fat in seeds and nuts (safflower oil or peanut oil) is stored in body cells as energy and protein resources.
  7. Digestion - Stomach acid comes partly from citrus fruit with chloride from salt (NaCl),
---------------------------- -  bile and pancreatic juices are found in bitter food such as grapefruit and tea.
  8. Kidneys  filter out extra minerals and water in blood to keep the blood pressure normal and from overloading the liver
----------------------------- with toxic minerals.  Even too much calcium will form kidney stones that must be flushed out in urine.
  9. Hormones: The Pituitary is the master gland informing the Thyroid to send out Growth Hormone to liver.
----------------------------- That needs red vegetable root, carrot, for Vitamin A, laver for vitamin B12, and mushrooms for B-compounds.
10. Thyroid  contains iodine for controlling metabolic rate, influencing growth and protein production.  It is found in seaweed.
11. Nerve: Neurotransmission needs acetylcholine, calcium, sodium, and potassium ions
------------------------------ which are found in nuts with B-compounds such as sesame, and peanut.
12. Muscle: Cell membrane is made of phospholipids, the fruit rind;  the structure is made of sulfuric acid linked with amino acids.
-----------------------------  Magnesium is for muscle contraction and relaxation. All these are found in fruit pulp and seeds.
13. Bones are calcium carbonate inside and calcium phosphate outside, hardened by sunshine or Vitamin D.
------------------------------ Calcium is in nuts, and phosphate in squash seeds.
14. Lungs  supply the body with oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Without oxygen five minutes, the brain will fall into coma.
15. Maintenance:  antioxidant such as Vitamin E removes saturated fat from arteries.  It is found in seeds and nuts - sunflower seeds.
16. Enzymes and coenzymes activate or inhibit activities.  They are made of vitamins and minerals found in food sources.

11  --  SPIRITUAL  HEALING

Carmela gradually got itchy eyes and dry coughing with mucous in her throat that could hardly be coughed out. Apparently, a change of the quality and quantity of her vegetarian diet had affected her health tremendously. Finally, she went to see her family physician about her irritated skin on her forehead about an inch long. Without examining her or getting close to look at her skin, she was simply told of having hayfever, which would be getting worse. She should apply nasal spray into her nose and cortisone on her skin. But cortisone didn't work on her skin and the nasal spray only irritated her nose. Uncle Ted advised his mother not to use it again because after using such nasal spray, he and his colleagues all had breeding nose. Then, another physician wanted Carmela returning to her family physician to check whether she had skin cancer, which the family physician refused to do, scolding her for not trusting his diagnosis.

Disregarding the cause of her eczema, Carmela thinks a person has karma like a number of pre-set examinations or problems for a person to go through in life from first grade to university. Her future karma depends on punctuality in completing her assignments in time to be graded just as a student must hand in her examination paper in time disregarding how many questions she couldn't answer. Grumbling against one obstacle won't help students to pass the examinations. Sickness is the time clock in each examination, a warning sign of completing something already known first disregarding the unknown problems. One must make use of the present moment of each day to achieve one step of the purpose of that particular season, as farmers can't delay their harvesting into winter.

Besides, every kind of work has some pressure and stress. No one can live without work as no one can live without food, toxic or non-toxic. After all, the white blood cells need toxic ones as antibiotic. So, Carmela believes that whatever will be will be. She sticks to her routine work.  If cancer or death come tomorrow, she can still say to God that she has not wasted her time in being a coward, worrying about sickness and death without doing something in her life.  She can't stop gardening just to avoid insect bites.  Likewise, she can't stop using her computer just to avoid radiation that may cause her skin rash and she can't fight against Bert everyday to get her own food.  He has to have conscience to change the way he cooks for her.

Well, that day of change of attitude finally came with Bert getting arthritis.  His family physician advised him in having high blood pressure too. Then he had fear of stroke and heart attack like his cousin and brother with heart by-pass surgery that he has started eating more vegetables and less protein food. Besides, the e-coli disease, mad cow disease, and the foot-and-mouth disease terrified him, so he eats more chicken and fish. Gradually, he worries even about getting diabetes that he lets Carmela choose and cook nutritious, vegetarian food.

Panic or sickness definitely forces people to solve problems not with anti-depression pills or alcohol but different ways in dealing with life. We must take a deep breath with our abdomen to think of the purpose of life as Carmela does.  We have stress or pain even when we overeat or fast. Stress is God's way to shake us up with a change of life style.  It is a powerful dose for the transformation of behaviour, making people to think time being precious that they must complete the most important thing in life first.

Obviously, victims or abusers, saints or devils will all face adversities with power struggle persistently with crisis coming up one after another to learn the wisdom of God.  It is a person's will power, which defines his character being sick with panic and depression, or strong with rage and rush to get high blood pressure, blowing up the arteries of his internal organs. Whoever deals adversity with faith, calmness and courage can have a relaxed, healthy life as Daniel in the loin's den.

Yet faith alone without following the conscience to act is pointless. A person's health is based on what he has eaten and done. That's why God says Daniel's righteousness can't save his kinsmen but himself because it is personal appetite and stress management that saves a person from sicknesses - passing through darkness as noonday to reach enlightenment.

Temper is the worse obstacle in life with sickness often comes from stress or rage, tightening up muscles to cause pain, inducing false alarm in the nervous system that notifies white blood cells in the lymphatic system to search for toxins or bacteria inside the body. Their work causes inflammation. When people relax or slow down at work, removing their competitive and aggressive behaviour, their stress and pain will go naturally away.  So, the body is just a robe to reflect the character of a soul. It may be misused and torn or discarded by personal character and environment. Youthfulness or health does not depend on magic pills or antioxidant but on the spiritual formula of controlling poor habits and tastes, bad temper and behaviour.

Some scientists keep trying to discover the formula of eternal youth.  Why doesn't physical exercise help athletes live a longer life than non athletes?  Does the fountain of youth exist on earth? According to the Bible, Noah had lived 950 years on earth; the fountain of youth does exist.  In September 2000, scientists say having anti-oxidant injected into worms, it can double the length of their life span while oxidation of minerals leads to decomposition, ageing and death. Yet, Vitamins C, E, and selenium are antioxidants, their excessive quantity causes skin rash; Vitamin E also dilates blood; Vitamin C causes abdominal cramp while selenium causes the disorder of nervous system, the losses of hair, nails and tooth. In fact, without oxygen for five minutes, people would sink into coma. Lacking fresh air in crowded room causes drowsiness, headache, and difficulty in breathing.  So, it is important to balance the oxygen and every item in the body naturally and properly.

When the body can't excrete any more overloaded nutrients, the first symptom of excessive sugar brings us diabetes, excessive fat brings us obesity and excessive protein brings us tumours, ruining our health gradually until we correct our habit of eating and drinking. Our body is simply created to control the excessive self-righteousness in our eating and work habits.

Lacking sunshine, the interior soft bone cannot mature into compact bone. An overexposure to the invisible electronic rays from microwave ovens, cellular phones, television sets and x-rays can change a person's DNA structure, resulting in deformed genes just like pesticides do. So, children shouldn't touch modern equipment that is often harmful like nuclear power as God had warned Eve of the fruit of the tree of knowledge.

About two thirds of a human body is water. It circulates all the time to produce internal action for natural healing. Likewise, labour work can produce heat to kill germs.  There are also many kinds of mineral health spas with heat penetrating the body to kill different kinds of germs.  Cancer cells can't survive over 42.5oC as blood cells can.  So, raising blood cells to 45oC for half of an hour can kill some type of cancer cells. Burying oneself in hot sand may do the wonder as well.  In fact, cancer cells absorb twenty times more protein than the body cell.  So fasting can eliminate the growth of tumours and cancer cells.  It is also said that soybean can lock up breast cancer cell's development.  Molybdenum in plant is good for preventing esophagus cancer.

The stomach has stress when it is overload with food.  It is a signal for us to stop eating rather than informing us to take medicine to help in digestion.  Taking antacid may develop even food allergies.  The stomach has stress when it is starving as well, making a person work for a living.  So our stress is a spiritual way of correcting and transforming our behaviour.

The liver is where all the nutrients being screened, detoxified and stored for distribution.  It also manufactures bile and nonessential amino acids, makes DNA and RNA. Yet, cholesterol – the saturated animal fat - runs directly into the heart from the small intestine through the lymph vessels, leaves fat everywhere in arteries.  So cholesterol is called unhealthy fat. Grazing cattle are inactive animals that they can't digest cholesterol like active cats and dogs.  Therefore, feeding cattle with bad meat causes the mad cow disease in animals as in people.

Even an animal can be our teacher that a messiah is also called the Lamb of God. Our purpose on earth is to learn living pleasantly as a big family in kindness. Students who stay in the same grade forever would drive a teacher nut. People must go forward from grade to grade without going backward to worship a teacher, whom the Lord has only borrowed the tongue for a second or a short while. If a teacher were the Lord, whoever sees His face would not live: as God had told Moses so in Exodus 33:20-23. God's words are breathing and carved directly into human hearts to educate mankind personally step by step at the right moment without overloading babies with professors’ knowledge right at birth.

Being angry at her husband for his former love affair, Grandaunt Jennifer gave herself the right in abusing him and her adult children verbally over twenty years.  One day dining in a restaurant with friends, her husband suddenly passed away.  At his funeral service, Jennifer still scolded him for dying in comfort without doing anything good in his life.  Later, she cried and explained to Carmela on long distance call that she had been rude in her voice to everybody all these years because she was forced into early retirement against her will. Her job was given to young employees.  She couldn't control her anger and sorrow of the discrimination of age in society where she couldn't find a job, rendering her life meaningless that she spoke so rude even to her son whom she had loved most.  Then, she concluded with a shot of insult, saying that she couldn't be a hypocrite like Carmela, having a smiling face even in bitterness. Thus Carmela wrote:

Dear Jennifer,

You have my deepest sympathy of the recent loss of your husband.  However, as we both know, there is no death in universe but a new life has just begun for both of you. Speaking frankly, I am sick of Bert's peculiar habits and sharp tongue since the day we got married. Living under his domination, I can't even recognize my own spirit, having no right even to serve my grandchildren or do charity. After I had run away for independence, Bert sent me into mental hospital. Thus, it has suddenly struck me that the tree of life bearing twelve manners of fruits in the sanctuary with leaves for the healing of all nations is a metaphor. The tree of life is family: bearing fruits of twelve seasons denotes bringing up children of different ages and grades while leaves denote leaving home in marriage, in divorce, or in comfortable death as some kind of healing of all nations. This comes truly from God's blessing in rescuing children and spouses from habitual abusive persons.

How would you like to live under your scornful mother's domination forever?  Didn't you leave her for Australia as well? Were you a hypocrite or a decent human being without yelling back, standing there with tears hidden in your brave smile listening to her abusive tongue?  Didn't you hope for her change of attitude?  Abusers must learn to correct their flaws in removing jealousy, domination and verbal abuses before God quit living in their conscience.  Separation is a necessity on earth to offer us a change of attitude bringing forth a peaceful reunion rather than a permanent slavery in the universe.

Arrogance comes from good luck and ignorance. On the other hand, compassion comes from understanding after passing through adversity. Learning from experience makes me having compassion for poor women locked up unfortunately by spouses in mental hospitals to have memory removed. Yet, I would never think of revenging upon my husband with the same stupid treatment for enforcing obedience upon him.  Such dominance is a disgrace to oneself.

Anyway, many people have suffered the misfortune of civil war, earthquake, or flood year after year.  They have learned to cooperate with neighbours and to care for one another. Since you have suffered the pain of unemployment, you can understand how much the poor, young people like your children need a job more than you do. Thus, have compassion in offering them your job. As you had never liked the atmosphere of your office, why don't you pursue your forgotten passion to take a trip around the world now?

With your savings, you can also pick up a hobby for pastime to be creative, doing some handiwork, beautifying your home and garden. Above all, you should look after your own health by getting rid of your anger. Your understanding and compassion would bring God and your children and grandchildren happiness.

Listening to God's words carved in conscience, every creature big or small has eternal life like water turning into vapour and cloud to return as rain on earth, giving life to others again and again. May you start a new life as an angel to speak softly and kindly to your children and friends, giving strangers your blessings and encouragement in their work that all can be benefit from the peace in your heart from this day on.

Yours truly,
Carmela

PART THREE -- SOCIETY
.
12 --  TEAM  SPIRIT

Sometimes, employers may have racial prejudice, ignoring an applicant's qualifications. However, upon the interview of an applicant with great personality, racial prejudice will definitely disappear.
There are millions of cars having about the same power to take a passenger from here to there just like human ability.  Nobody would insist on taking a particular brand and serial number of taxi going downtown.  After ten years, all cars will be cast away as workers will retire, too. What will be left to go with a soul to heaven is the spirit with memory, not the body that performs the work. Ability may disappear in old age to become illusion to the most powerful men. One day, a person can work; next morning, the ability can disappear like a blind man depending on a stick or a guide dog to walk. Then, will it be the stick or the guide dog or the blind man going to Heaven? What does our ability mean to other men or to God?   I bet classmates and colleagues will choose our personality rather than our ability to be friends.  It is easy for employer to train an employee with certain skill too but it is hard to correct a hostile attitude while the success of a company depends mainly on teamwork in friendly atmosphere.

The older generation wants to catch up with young generations with a one-day-course in operating software controlling branch offices all over the world that they are willing to pay high price for it. Uncle Charles, in his early thirties, works as such instructor, flying around the whole continent, training senior executives individually to operate software system.

An instructor must have full confidence in himself without getting nervous in front of senior executives and directors.  However, he must also respect his students. So personality plays the main role of being employed as personal instructor without the need of being a genius programmer. He should never intimidate clients with unnecessary information to confuse their mind. The best instructors on earth become useless when there is neither students nor the back up of a firm with good reputation.  So success comes from teamwork of a good boss, the right sales manager and instructors plus good clients.  It is team effort with mutual respect that brings forth prosperity and growth to all parties.

One night, Carmela dreamed of walking towards a foggy city before dawn. There was nobody but another woman walking along on that road. Entering an unknown city, she saw some road maintenance crew there but shops and cafes weren't opened yet. Carmela looked lost and confused, the other woman invited her home nearby for a rest first.  Carmela followed the woman into an old warehouse apartment. The suite there was big but gloomy. Upon their arrival, the woman went to bed and her roommate went to work, leaving Carmela all alone wondering what was her purpose of visiting the city. She found herself penniless and must phone Charles immediately with her credit card.  Then she woke up.

Carmela wondered why in dream she had wandered into such an unpleasant American industrial city which she had nothing to do about, meeting two single women and sensing their lives so miserable that she must call Charles right away but she was  penniless with just a credit card? There must be a problem concerning Charles with an American girlfriend.

A marriage matched in faith among Christian vegetarians like Carmela at her time forty years ago was almost impossible that she had met none.  Besides, upon voicing her doubt about the Trinity Doctrine to a priest, Carmela was told to repent of having Satan in her soul.  Yet the doctrine had been created under the pressure and command of the ambitious Constantine the Great as president of the church in 325, twelve years before he was baptized as Christian, disregarding Jesus says in St. John 14:28 that ‘the Father is greater than I’.  The purpose of the Trinity Doctrine was for controlling all Christians through one Pope directly under the emperor himself that had been strongly objected by the Greek Orthodox Church.

Believing in the Father as her only God, Carmela withdrew quietly from her Catholic church, marrying an atheist – Bert - to bring up children with just the truth written in the Bible without any blind belief of any doctrine made by men in God's name. She thought that could help her staying out of all the ridiculous, religious wars and argument.

Ah! Charles is like the wanderer as she was in her dream, working as instructor, spending at least four days a week in hotels of American cities although he has a beautiful condominium in Toronto! Being a vegan, he is still single at the age of thirty-four. Despite having lots of friends, he probably hasn't yet met a vegan girl of his dream.

Charles can't live without friends and is surrounded daily by friends who want him to stay single to be their big brother. Carmela considered being too popular with no time for a special person was the cause of girlfriends leaving Charles one after another. He must have a new girlfriend now. As a mother, she should discuss seriously with him. Yes, Charles phoned Carmela from the States that he would be introducing Monica to her in his next visit.

“You had bought home a few girlfriends previously.  Don't bring one home again until you are engaged;” said Carmela tactically.
“Mom, proposal is left to women in these days.”  Ah!  Too timid was his past failure then – waiting for a proposal!    So she replied, “I have never heard of such thing!  How old is Monica?”
   “Twenty-six.”

“That is not too young to be married.  It is the right age to have a family.  If a woman waits too long, she would have difficulty in having children.  Propose to her!”
“I have known her just a few months.”
“It doesn't matter.  If you love her, you love her.  If you don't, you still won't love her in another forty years. So, engage to her first, showing your sincere love that she won't be alarmed with your popularity.”

“She is afraid of being not so sophisticated like my folks.”
   “What does that mean?”
   “We have different life styles.”
   “Is she a vegetarian?”
   “No.”
“Well, I wasn't a vegetarian till twenty-one and you weren't a vegan till twenty-eight! This stage of understanding comes gradually from person to person: many of my friends didn't become vegetarians till senior years. As long as you love one another and she is a good girl who doesn't smoke or drink, you two can build up a paradise for happy and healthy children.  It is God's will that people marry outside their families, exposing children to varieties of knowledge that they have choices -- developing a mind to harvest the best of both parents.”

“Mom, you are right.  I love children but not just my own.  I am going to save enough money to settle down and build a free summer camp for school children in the future, exposing them to all kinds of cultures, sports, and activities.  Is that not your dream of having a sanctuary on earth as stated in Ezekiel 47:12-22? Visitors entering from the north should go out through the south (46:9) exposing to the cultures of all nations with the tree of life bearing twelve manners of fruits?”

“But nobody can build a sanctuary single handed.  You need hundreds of helping hands even with just a show and you are penniless. Paradise is not a place but our attitude of making one another happy.  Environment gives the spirit only a chance to meet in expressing oneself that can start from home, entertaining guests graciously.  Every home can be a sanctuary for children as the Tree of Life, bearing twelve manners of fruits.  Every one is unique.”
Charles finally gets happily married with Monica in a year.

A baby has a body with feeling to know only hunger and satisfaction.  The mind is so simple that it takes time to develop into maturity with learning; making mistakes is thus a daily matter. A child may be badly misguided too: as little Andy was manipulated to bring his mother urine as medicine. Yet, seeing the consequence, he learned to distinguish the good and the bad even without the verbal ability in expressing his intention. Therefore, theory and practice are two different matters with intention counted. The spirit and courage must be developed first to handle a situation, learning consequence as truth.  Thus development comes in three stages: first the body keeping healthy, next, the mind looking for truth, and finally, the spirit taking responsible action.

Back in the forties, the widow Mrs. Daisy Chung took Mr. Right Main’s children away as revenge when he married someone else.  Yet, on her sea voyage, the ship was sunk. Daisy saved Annie from drowning; the 6-year-old Nora was lost while other passengers had saved Carmela and Andy; the 13-year-old Jennifer Chung, Daisy’s own daughter, had climbed up a lifeboat to save herself.  Losing all her money, Daisy took the children back to Singapore for depending on their father for a living once more.  The circumstance of saving Annie made Daisy a heroine and the children's guardian. Annie was grateful to Daisy for life disregarding the woman’s bad temper, gambling habit, wicked plans and tongue.

In Daisy's old age, Annie set her husband free with a divorce and sent their children overseas to study for herself to live with Daisy without them suffering such nuisance. Unable to induce Mr. Main's children sinning like Daisy herself, her conscience annoyed her daily with guilt and shame of her strong contrast to Annie's kind character. That made her more grumpy. Annie had troubled employing servants since nobody liked to serve the grumpy Daisy while Annie herself took two jobs to stay out till midnight in avoidance of chatting with Daisy too.

Annie begged Carmela to visit Daisy in her last days. Seeing the seventy-two-year old sick woman looked like ninety although having lived like queen in Annie's wealth, Carmela had an intuition that Daisy had been punished tremendously by conscience, wanting to make a confession. Yet she had no courage to admit that through her lust and desire of being Mrs Main, she had manipulated not only the heart attack and death of Carmela's mother but the death of Nora and a servant indirectly. Her eyes were looking eagerly at Carmela for help.

At last, Carmela said,  “King David had sinned by sending his lover's husband, a captain, to the front-line to be killed that he could take Bethsheba as wife.  Nathan the prophet told him about God's wrath and he repented.  God simply wants a person to repent his sins. It is a pleasure for God to see a sinner being converted, giving such person a chance to do penitence.”

Education definitely comes in team effort not simply from one master but also from media, society, world history and family.  Evil is not wiped out in history because God's chosen man, King David, could also sin that each suggestion of a master must be individually analysed as best, good, poor and worse; ignorant, bad or evil with no blind obedience or worshipping images as God. Children must identify any flaw in suggestions from peer or authority. Exposing to temptations and adversities may develop our wisdom, bringing forth the spirit of maturity: to be compassionate and co-operative in society.  It is only team spirit and not oppressive power that can find peace in conscience making the world a new paradise.

13  --  AN  IDEAL  COMMUNITY

The most beautiful place on earth depends not only on unusual scenery attracting tourists but also on acceptable living standard to local residents. City planning should be introduced into local primary schools as art. Then, basic technology must be taught with practice in achieving the goal properly.

In a poor country, the foundation of a house and its framework can be done in a week or two by professional people.  Yet, homeowners and their children can put in panels, wall partitions, and roof tiles by themselves.  It is fun to build a house by oneself. The western standard of housing has little meaning to people in poor countries. Children must see assembling a house as fun and easy to do like playing Lego.  The only difference is replacing tiny ready-made plastic blocks with concrete blocks, paper or wooden panels.

Building materials can be inexpensive when a village buys and shares equipment among all villagers, making cement blocks and panels.  Besides, it depends on co-operation of villagers to build sewage treatment plant to have clean water, taking care of environment to have a healthy living with team effort. To facilitate trading with one another, each village should also have certain kind of industry different from nearby villages.

Miss America 2000 can play eight kinds of musical instruments, claiming that life is a continuous education, which has no end.  She keeps on learning whatever she can.  Truly, people keep on learning up to old age purely for their interest in knowledge. In order to know his people better, the Jordanian king had sometimes disguised himself as taxi driver and sometimes as reporter to be in contact with people. The ex-American President, Jimmy Carter, had helped in carpentry work, building houses for homeless families.  No job is too low for a great person to do.

Since children are the harvesters of wisdom taught by their own conscience, heroes, saints, parents, teachers and world history, let’s take a good look of Canada that was rated in July 2000, the best quality-of-life nation in the world: seven years in a row.

Back in the early sixties, Esther came with a group of some thirty new immigrants from Singapore to Canada. They all found jobs within a week. Canadian currency was higher than American dollars with no federal debts. Grandma Esther worked as a nurse in hospital and Grandpa Alex, being a chemist, worked in the Fishery Department for two decades until the resignation of the Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the eighties - the country's great recession. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has then introduced us the Federal and Provincial Sales and Services Taxes of 14% to 15% in different provinces for the reduction of the national and provincial debts. Yet in 1997, the federal debt was still $549.5 billion. In 2003, each Canadian taxpayer is responsible for the federal debt of $172,416 - about the price of a condominium.

Statistics Canada reported in January 2000 that 42% middle aged citizens had post secondary diplomas or degrees: this is 43% baby boom men and 40% baby boom women. Young Canadians are even better educated.  Many of them have two or three degrees but can't find jobs in Canada. They have to look for jobs in foreign countries that the emigration number was 58,787 persons in 1999.  Many graduates work then as babysitters or waiters, getting part-time jobs or self-employed: sometimes earning less than minimum salary or at loss that thousands of small businesses have closed down within one to two years.

Canadian population in 1998 was 30.3 millions with 67.9% population between the age of 15-64, having 23,320,310 born in Canada and the rest coming from immigration. There were 11.849 million people working full time and 2.682 million, part time while some 6.5 million did voluntary work in public. The difficulty of getting jobs in Canada made many new Chinese immigrants return to Hong Kong while people from Taiwan obtaining immigration visas did not come at all.

Despite such high rate of unemployment in Canada, on April 1, 2001, bus drivers in Greater Vancouver Regional District went on strike for four months. Although the union had accepted a pay hike of 8.5% in three years, members won't allow some bus routes to be contracted out that would reduce their overtime work.  After 120 days, people set up tents at city hall overnight with strong protest for their need of public transit running. The provincial government finally ordered bus drivers returning to work within a week.

At the same time, nurses had wanted a two-year contract pay hike of 60%, rejecting the offer of 22% at $32 an hour.   There is a shortage of nurses in Canada but 52% registered nurses in BC are working part-time because they are not trained to work in operation rooms that need nurses.  Yet, why they aren't given chances to be trained 17 weeks in operation rooms? Sometimes, union members do not welcome new comers or non-union workers sharing their work. Jobs and grants are always given to people with connections. Even after studying and passing the nursing examination in Canada, some new immigrants still can't find such jobs here.

In such turmoil, MPs raised their own salaries 20% and the Prime Minister, 42% in June 2001. Then, medical service staff members went on strike for 24% pay hike in July. When nurses finally got a settlement of 23.5% pay hike, teachers demanded then a pay hike of 34% in September 2001. Consequently, Norway becomes the best country to live in 2002 and 2003, while Canada drops to the 8th place on UN list.

According to Fraser Institute's 2003 tax calculation of the average BC family of two and more persons with a total income of $66,816, the tax bill is $33,157 (49.62%) from income tax, property tax, Sales Taxes to import duty and other taxes. With another pay hikes of government employees, should taxes be raised again that average people have 40% instead of 50.38% of their income taking home?  When would strikes end?  Who can truly benefit from taking turn in strikes with each union demanding more pay hike than the last one?

King Solomon was a wise man.  In his forty years of reign, he spent seven years to build God a temple and thirteen years to build an extravagant house for his seven hundred wives, princesses and three hundred concubines that he taxed people heavily.  Consequently, his son Rehoboam followed his example, taxing people even more that his country was immediately divided into two; ten tribes for Jeroboam, only Judah and Benjamin for Rehoboam as stated in 1Kings 12:20-21.

Obviously in history, even without strong unions, government employees have treated themselves as a distinct class from other citizens.  However, a job is not a game for competition but manna from heaven - an essential need to all life from birds to animals alike for earning a living. To eliminate job shortage by reducing staff working hours, government jobs can definitely be shared among all qualified applicants, leaving none to be unemployed.

As in a kibbutz community, everybody should have a vote in decision making because a community is like a school serving students of different grades according to their different needs rather than serving teachers and masters.

Many countries have student exchange programs sending students overseas to study and to live in private homes for opening up their mind.  Thus in Israel, youths in Kibbutz are given money to travel two years in foreign countries to look for adventure and in search of personal goals.  They are welcome to return to community, living and working there or earning a salary elsewhere to be contributed to the community.

God talks about the tree of life, which bears twelve manners of fruits. In reality, a rootstock can be grafted with twelve kinds of buds to bring forth a variety of fruits year round.  However, as metaphor, it is having job rotation every month in apprenticeship, making life interesting for young people all over the world with no unemployment for any one.

Indeed, people have choices.  To earn big money, they should go to private sector and compete in production and sales. However, democracy is having no monopoly in essential government services.  Citizens come first.
Since Canadians already had had the best quality-of-life on earth in the nineties, it is our duty to balance our books. Naturally, we should express our talents in work without ignoring the interest of our souls: doing meditation and entertaining family and friends.  That’s why we need job sharing among all nations without slaving ourselves to wealth that is harmful to our health.

 14   --  HEROES  &  SAINTS

I asked Grandaunt Laura, “You enjoy reading mythology, what have you learned from it?”
“Myths are about local heroes or kings and queens being regarded as gods and goddesses on earth. Egyptian and Greek gods and goddesses were often subjected to evil fate predicted. Without adversities, there would be no hero or god on earth showing their extraordinary spirit. A person, being god or saint, was anointed by priests. Right now, the Pope is also eager to anoint the late Mother Theresa as saint after learning her spirit had had performed some miracle cures. In one word, the spirits of the dead live forever from ancient days up to the present into the future.”

“Talking about gods and spirits, what is the difference between the Second Coming of Christ with the many incarnations of Krishna in Hinduism?”
"Being born on earth according to personal choice is incarnation. The Second Coming on duty appointed is reincarnation. For an invisible ghost that doesn't need to be born, coming and going freely a thousand times, it won't be just the second coming any more."

"What does the bride from heaven mean (Re 21:2) – with angels bringing down a new city of Jerusalem from Heaven to Earth?”

"Spiritually speaking, it should be the other way round with people like angels building a sanctuary on earth matching with the principles of God in Ezekiel 44:20/31 and  Daniel 8:14.
“The Prince of Peace is a man fighting with his tongue and not with a sword in an assembly of world religions focusing on drawing agreements in important issues of humanity that has already been held in recent years. The final doctrine of humanity is then the bride from heaven with sensible, moral principles being practised by all nations 2,300 days before God would have her sanctified."

“If the body is to house an eternal soul, what does death mean?”

“A suitable housing is based on basic requirements: the suitable material, the process of building it, the shape of fitting the purpose and the functional equipment added or removed. Then as adult, you will even move out of your parental house.
“A human body is first born like an extendable crib constantly changed in size to fit a soul's development. After having education and free will in choosing good or evil, a person needs a new shape to represent the look of his character, showing his spirit, moving out of parental home to build his own house.
“God says men were created after all other creatures. Being more intelligent than the earlier created animals, where do the human souls come from - transposition? When some monkeys had decided that they didn't like gathering fruits on treetops and lost the use of their tails, they need new shapes to represent their characters.  God let them become farmers working on land with skilful hands as said in evolution theory but they can also go through incarnation and reincarnation. Thus death is discarding the body given by parents, having it replaced with new features that match the personal character of the soul.
“When a person's spirit doesn't enjoy walking or working, then his new body will lose his limbs looking like snake or fish going backward to enjoy a more simple life as free will comes first. Character gives each being a shape of its very own spirit. Death is thus departing from the existing body given by parents to a new body personally designed to represent one's own character as some may go to heavens as explorers of new worlds while angels and saints may reincarnate as preachers on earth. That's why geniuses are born.”

"Designing our own body and shape!  Have you ever wonder whether a chick or an egg comes first?  Does it have a choice not to be a chick?”
"It is said in St. John's Revelation, the Word comes first. So the idea of God comes first -- giving each species a different ability with a given shape. Thus, a change of character, talent or habit will get a different shape like monkey losing its tail may gain skilful hands through reincarnation with judges’ consent.”

“Buddhism is in fact a philosophical theory without God.  What is the main difference between philosophical and religious salvation and where will each religion lead to?”

“Buddhists believe in judgement that fate after death depends on personal behaviour with endless reincarnations and training for every soul to reach enlightenment as first taught by Gautama, a prince who was looking for purpose of life, inner peace and self-esteem which his wealth and position couldn't offer him.  This sounds sensible to me. A monk once said upon being charmed by beauty, he would consider a woman as a skeleton to keep his impure thought away!  I think one should admire a beautiful woman as a star above that shouldn't be raped or possessed because God has created Eve to be Adam's companion, prospered and multiplied. Love is splendid and holy to be human drive to serve family, community extending to the world, respecting one another as temples of God.
“Hinduism is a belief in gods and goddesses with reincarnation as an education curriculum to reach understanding through experience, celebrating life with positive attitude to reach humanity step by step in caste system.
“God the Father promises all nations that they will be living in new paradise on earth with salvation coming from His words written in our conscience: all are equally loved as individual for co-operation in universe to celebrate the Tree of Life with fruits of many kinds.  We must then respect the principles of  the Ten Commandments to live harmoniously without creating suffering or killing on Earth.
“Thus, believing in God gives people optimism in being unique to lead an adventurous life, taking challenge and responsibility in developing children's individual characters and talents to experience God's joy of giving. People should just be one with God in spirit without ever desiring His power and glory as Satan did.
“Buddha can both be saint and ghost but he had run away from parental responsibility without such experience, understanding and love like those of God the Father whose patience fills my heart with warmth and security. Consequently, even my ignorance and adversities can't frighten me because God is supporting everyone in conscience, giving us advice and encouragement to handle all problems one step at a time with His faith in all nations making to the paradise in the future. He has us taught conscientiously with philosophical principles from ancient Greek democracy to utilitarianism, with existentialism to fight totalitarianism, developing our understanding of being firm in resisting the temptation of acting as our enemies to be judged likewise. His judgement may be delayed in concern of the safety of ten good persons in a sin city but He is not blind. Besides, warfare shouldn't be escalated from swords to guns, bombs to germ and chemical and nuclear warfare with little power needed to hurt even the innocent third party. There is no winner, no salvation on earth except with faith in God's love and righteousness that gives us inner peace without involving in killing.”

Apparently, we don't know much our way without experience and education. True penitence should be enough to redeem a personal mistakes. Yet, we can't reach understanding until exchanging positions with enemies through reincarnations since stubbornness, self-indulgence and laziness often make people stop learning even in adolescence. I simply wonder how God would treat our pets?

When my dog was dying of cancer, Laura said to me, “According to Ezekiel 1:6-16, there are cherubim in heaven, every one has four faces: man-lion-ox-eagle ... and work was in the wheel ... of a wheel. For oriental explanation of such wheel of a wheel, it is a kind of life living in reincarnation for a special task.  A dog's duty is to teach you how to be loved.  You don't have to be great or intelligent to be loved by parents, friends or God.  Being faithful and content like your dog will already be loved.  Since God's love is greater than your love, He will love your dog more than you do and will reward it after its duty fulfilled, giving us the example of winning love without using wealth and greatness as temptation. You have to let it go in peace to receive its reward and next assignment from God.”

Truly, I also consider responsible workers as my heroes and the hungry, frightened parents in the Second World War as saints because in hard time, they had brought up a new generation knowing much more than they did, living a life much better than they had.  God will reward them all despite their failures and mistakes. Human beings are not judged according to their flaws but courage and intentions without letting the seeds of the new paradise disappear while perfection is probably just a procedure of learning wisdom to correct mistakes as the people of Niniveh

15  --  LAW  &  CONSCIENCE

When Tracy married Henry Johnson in 1996, he had come out of college working a year at a small computer shop in Los Angeles that had eight employees with five being salesmen. He and the owner were the only technicians installing software for clients. His starting salary was US$15 an hour. Two years later, the shop was sold to a new owner. As the business was poor, the employer had reduced two salesmen to balance the book and in December 2000, he sold the shop with 110 clients to a stockbroker, Mr Lowe, for $350,000. Well, Mr. Lowe didn’t bother to keep even the only technician, Henry for $18 an hour. Thus, Henry started his one-man consultant service at home, dedicated all his time two to three days a month to serve one client in regular basis on contract $50 an hour. Gradually, clients demand not only his repairing service at their offices: they ask for instruction on cellular phone disregarding whether Henry is driving a car or eating his lunch or sleeping in bed. He becomes his clients' technician, instructor and counsellor.

As a computer shop without installation service, Mr Lowe’s former clients would naturally go elsewhere as he had already known and set that up the third time.  Five months later, Mr Lowe sued Henry for one and half million dollars for stealing his clients disregarding Henry was not dealing with sales as Mr. Lowe. After all, which client would be buying new computer every year while Mr. Lowe wouldn’t do any technical services at all.  There shouldn’t be much conflict in business.

Where could Henry get $1.5 million since he had worked only five years in society for an hourly wage?  Of course he had to have a lawyer representing him in court. The lawyer had to read letters and documents, interviewing Henry's clients and former colleagues and bosses to be called as witnesses and doing research work that he couldn’t give clients any firm amount of hours he would charge but  $400 an hour.

After Henry paying his lawyer US$60,000 for going to court in August 2001, the court case was postponed to December 2001 by Mr Lowe and again to February 2002 with lawyer's fees turning up to US$150,000.  Then the lawyer simply quit the case without going to court due to the case being postponed again and he had personal problems that he had no more time to handle Henry’s case.  Henry had to employ another lawyer to deal with it and the new lawyer charged $80,000 for his fees.

Laura sighed, "A person can be killed by the expenses of lawyers, having a case dragged on over two years without verdict but expenses. Probably, we are here on earth to learn criminology so that nobody would sin ignorantly likewise in heaven. White collar crime is killing people invisibly.”

"Is it a crime for ex-employees to serve the clients of former shops or firms?"  I asked with disbelief.
"Some say no because clients have the right to choose whom they would like to do business with.  But any ex-owner of the firm can't act as competitor of the new owner for five years.  In this case, Henry was just an employee there.  However, salesmen used to receive commissions but the shop owner had paid all his staff with company shares that had no value. So Henry had received a number of the company shares. Thus, for less than $2,000 bonus shares received for his past five years services, Mr Lowe made false claim that Henry was the co-owner who had sold the firm to him and demanded $1.5 million damage for stealing his clients.”
“Mr Lowe must be expecting a windfall of earning a million dollars a year with such a small investment of $350,000!”
“That was what he had done twice before and had been interviewed on TV for those cunning deals that were not allowed to be mentioned in Henry’s court case to influence judgment.”

"An average person's monthly salary simply can't cover a lawyer’s one day service charge. A righteous system should limit the postpone of a court case thrice with no good reason.”
“There is not yet such a righteous system on earth.”

"I think the delay in court settlement is to build up Henry's lawyer expenses till he can't afford any, ending up an easy prey to submit paying any reduced sum Mr Lowe asked for."
"Indeed, after dragging the case for two years, Mr Lowe asked for an out of court settlement of $250,000. He is definitely a blackmailer!”

How could poor Henry earning just $18 an hour for a few years in society pay a sum of $250,000 again after Tracy had already paid his two lawyers’ expenses of $230,000?  In another word, Mr Lowe is blackmailing Henry’s family for money like the talk show host, Oprah, being rich, was blackmailed by Texas cattlemen, suing her for a libel case against dairy industry due to her talk of the way cattle being treated, causing their tremendous loss in sale. However, representing herself without a lawyer, she won the case.  Still, it means the law gives people the right to sue whether right or wrong, so that timid ones will seal their tongues and victims may commit suicide to avoid burdening their families. Except lawyers, who can find freedom of speech in America?

Laura sighed, "We have now thousands of laws as games on earth that can’t protect workers’ income through hourly wage, hard work, and services.  Ordinary people’s earning can easily go all to lawyer fees or blackmailers.  Something as simple as ‘thou shalt not kill’ doesn't exist as well.  People get their own rights to kill in insanity or road rage, and sacrifice animals as the will of God despite His rage when Israelis rejected manna from heaven in the desert and asked for meat in Moses’ days. Thus God gave people a choice that anyone eating the quails sent in would die of plague! Our conscience forbids us to kill. Conscience reigns first; then law of nature takes over teaching people right and wrong with consequences of behaviour.”

Medical science discovers the dangers of eating meat. A person can count on religious truth and scientific evidence besides insight and humanity that meat is not proper human food. However, who would appreciate any truth that doesn’t satisfy human desire and lust, wealth and power? Countless people knowing the truth that smoking marijuana would ruin their health, they still want drugs on street and free needles provided by government, making drug dealers rich.  Powerful drug dealers have now the loudest voice in demand-ing law to legalize their trade: calling drug as painkiller while youths clinging on it for high that 44% Canadian youths aged 17 have admitted trying marijuana a few times.

We need government and law or regulations; otherwise, traffic would go chaos whether to drive on the left-hand side or the right-hand side to avoid collision. Safety rules are in all kinds of industries just as in different kinds of sports made by experts that people should respect. So government should also have policy protecting workers and small businesses without allowing court cases postponed over six months to interrupted even family life tremendously.

Mr Lowe, the plaintiff, had postponed the court date thrice dragging it for three years to wait for the judge he wanted. It was finally presented in court for eight days. The judge didn’t give any verdict for ten months. Suddenly, Henry received a court notice to pay $350,000 damage to Mr Lowe. The bank accounts of Henry, Tracy and their child were frozen.  Henry’s lawyer has made an appeal for Henry free of charge for such unreasonable sentencing beyond the defendant’s earned salary in three years. Yet upon learning the appeal, unexpectedly Mr Lowe got a court order to draw out all the money from Henry’s business account, leaving him nothing to pay his bills.
Anyway, even if the law at this moment is truly on Mr Lowe’s side, his wife had despised him so much that she had divorced him a year before, taking their six-year-old son along. Thus in Luke 54:57-59, Jesus warns plaintiffs to judge themselves.

In BC, there was a case started since June 2003: a former 43-year-old graduate shocked the world, putting her own picture on front page newspaper, suing the university and four English instructors $18 million damage. The reason was that one professor had given one extra class to students at home on one Sunday. She couldn’t attend it on any Sundays due to her Christian belief.  However the professor refused to change the date to accommodate her.  Besides, another professor had criticized her opinion on e-mail that everybody could read.

First of all, in Mark 2:23, Jesus went through the cornfields on Sunday, his disciples began to pluck the ears of corn and Jesus defended them from judgment. To me, the Sunday commandment was to protect slaves from being forced by master to work seven days a week without rest.  It doesn’t prohibit a mother from looking after her children seven days a week, someone unemployed from getting a part-time job on weekends, or a private lecture to students on Sundays.  Next, students don’t have to attend every lecture at school or university to pass examinations especially those out of campus. Why didn’t an adult-student drop the course when she despises her professors’ opinions and teaching?  Why does she make her opinion more known in public newspapers if she doesn’t like any professor to judge her opinion on e-mail or Internet?  How can a country allow such ridiculous lawsuit? The plaintiff said it was no big deal in demanding $18 million damage, just a tiny 3% of the university’s annual expenses!  Good, with thirty-four students like her, there won’t be any more university left in Vancouver. Law has truly let employers and workers of all kinds ruined mentally and economically by senseless lawsuits.

Anyway, there was an unsolved case with a group of witnesses at a Squamish party refused to give out any information of crime. Five years later, the killer, who kicked the host’s intruded neighbour to death in 1997, came forward willingly in 2003 to admit his sin to police, redeeming his peace with his own conscience - the judge. Thus, even invisible to human eyes, God’s justice forever exists!

16  --  VERIFYING  THE  TRUTH

Stage by stage through historical events and time, people can chart the progress of a goal leading to new paradise. The discovery of each mistake in law or principle with correction done is a tremendous gain to humanity. Each word of philosopher, theologian, scientist, environmentalist or politician can now be charted through historical past to the future its percentage of truth and false, pros and cons in offering the rise and fall of humanity.

About 2,700 years ago, Jehovah has predicted through Isaiah that a virgin shall give birth to a child. Medical science has proven that is possible nowadays.  A description of a sanctuary with a tree bearing twelve manners of fruits by Ezekiel and St. John can also be cultivated with grafting. Such predictions should be put on a chart of the world to verify whether a designer God has made His plan run on procedure towards new paradise with lion eating straws.
In 1 King 13:1-24, a man of God out of Judah was sent to Bethel to cry against the altar of King Jeroboam who made people worship the two calves made of gold.  God warned the man not to stay or eat in the city after his work.  But then an old prophet cheated him to return there to eat as the will of God.  Consequently, on his second departure, he was killed by a lion. His poor fate probably came from accepting another prophet's word rather than the one in his own conscience. This tells us the direct word of God is above a priest's doctrine or good will. Each person must truly question himself where does his salvation come from: in religious doctrine and favoritism or in righteousness and humanity with God’s Word carved in one’s conscience.  One prophet can mislead another prophet in the name of God. Can men offer to serve God and speak for Him when God didn’t even want His favourite servant, King David’s bloody hands, to build a temple for Him while St Paul regards every person as a temple of God with God’s spirit dwelling in everybody? Prophets should definitely withhold themselves from misusing God’s name.  In Jeremiah 33:25, God says: ‘if my covenant be not with day and night ... Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant ...’ A contract with God can be terminated at any time when a servant doesn't observe the contract rigidly.

I asked Laura, “Should people sacrifice justice for peace?”
She answered, “Being a judge, if you sacrifice other's rights for your own peace, it is like accepting bribe, then there will be wars: people were mad even at an Olympic gold medal being unjustly rewarded in Salt Lake City, 2002 that it had been recalled with the judge resigned.  If you indulge others into sins without educating them righteousness, Jesus will charge you for misleading children into sins. There is a code of conduct even among a group of animals or monkeys that each member should observe or there will be no peace in universe.”

“Who is the authority to make such code of conduct?”
“In family, the parents; in society, the unions and the government; in universe, God sets the rules of nature in physics and chemistry. But each species has a different code of conduct or policy where to live and what to do like different ages leading to different grades with different goals to achieve.  Once a grade is completed, it goes on to the next grade, next goal with another policy and other skills to learn universal behaviour -- humanity.”

“What is the difference between righteousness and justice?”
“Justice is like a teacher giving marks to students each according to the standard of his class.  So a student of primary school can get a mark of 100% just as a college student although their levels of intelligence are different.  Then righteousness means that you should have compassion to grade the primary school students according to their standard rather than the college standard.  In this case, a good cat can get a 100% mark to enter heaven just as a human being while a thief will fail to enter it.  So justice is most likely graded by society while righteousness is graded by conscience."

“How can truth benefit mankind?  Is it important for a child to know how does a seed grow into tree or just to know it?”
“The significance of truth is the healing power of all things. Knowing how a seed can grow into tree, you can plant one and water it. Knowing where do seeds come from, you can collect them for sowing to produce fruit. With such scientific knowledge, people can make a living and help the ignorant ones to become knowledgeable likewise, without hunting or stealing for a living. So, truth is the power of healing and relaxation that becomes global salvation.”

“Have you not simplified salvation disregarding unemployment being all over the world that well educated people still can't make an honest living?”
“Truth is to identify all the mistakes made by politicians through history to correct them that we can reach global employment. Political philosophy is returning society to ancient Greek democracy, having opposite parties sitting together for a good debate, looking for mistakes to reduce suffering and injustice on earth.  In debate, leaders and their oppositions should respect one another for removing mistakes sincerely. After all, their difference in righteous-ness may just be 49% to 51% due to timing and condition as which country should owe the water right of the Jordan River.  Should it be shared equally according to the number of population every decade since the population of each country varies from time to time?”

“Who has such clear conscience in caring about fairness while just a few men in rage may destroy the world any time with some dangerous chemicals or germs stolen from American laboratories. I wonder how does God deal with terrorists that ruin the design and procedure of His paradise? Giving free will to mankind is definitely dangerous.”
“Taking free will away, a soul is sentencing to spiritual death as robot - being a thousand times worse than without merely a temporary body to serve the soul that lives forever. Anyway, aren’t men also terrorists to insects and animals, having them killed in millions and trillions?  However, the new generations of insects are growing stronger and stronger. Likewise, terrorists can't destroy God’s design of having human beings lived ultimately in peace on earth. It is our duty to learn what drives men into terrorism and solve this problem righteously to eliminate such behaviour in the future.”

“What do you think about fate and prediction in astrology?  Is it determined by God?”
“When students enter an examination hall, the test is announced in advance which you may call prediction. Their grades are determined by their hard work coming out differently as their individual fates. The teacher would call the system of astrology as a procedure of education, guessing according to past experience whether a student may pass it or not without knowing the exact mark of each student.  Therefore, personal fate or mark is determined by personal effort with last minute counted.”

“What can such a report card lead to?”
“The report card tells you how did you get into this stage and what is your present curriculum and how the grade or fate of next term can be improved. A soul learns continuously in different shapes and forms to reach the ultimate goal of God, having all spirits living harmoniously and eternally in universal righteousness.”

“How does God involve personally in human education?”
“God can give people special training in similar situation to make decision again and again in repetitious dreams until people catch the correct answer in dealing with a coming examination. So, free will plays the main role of education to fight terrorism or ignorance within oneself. Salvation is to control one's own abusive tongue or foolishness rather than another person's act. We must know the limit of our strength and leave others’ salvation or education to the teachers of their own classes. Kindergarten children need neither college education nor the interference of such professors until their maturity."

“What can be worse than death?”
“Disgrace makes soldiers and politicians commit suicide, so does pain make patients demand euthanasia.  Loneliness and boredom make youths commit suicide with drugs while unemployment drives workers into depression committing suicide.  Thus, worse than death is probably living in inactivity without goal, deserted even by the Holy Ghost or the conscience."

“Would God ever come in His glory as human being?”
“In Isaiah 66:1 God says, “the heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.” How can a human being be compared to God’s grandeur –as a germ in His intestine?  Furthermore, can your daddy’s baby picture represent his present character of an adult and a father to you?  Can you find his character in that baby image?  Character is in WORDS.  God insists on living in human conscience, carving His words in our hearts, as your father would like you to remember his love and character in your heart.  You can feel God whenever you open up your heart, respecting those who observe His code of conduct.  After all, if you create something good, don't you want other to admire your work?  If you have children, don't you want to present them to the world?  So does God want us to admire His children likewise, encouraging them to do what are righteous without ridiculing proper behaviour or daring others into sins as the serpent did to Eve.”

“Some babies were born in sickness and poverty.  Where is God's mercy upon the little ones?”
“In Hinduism and Greek mythology, gods and goddesses may appear humbly as animals. So shapes and forms like cattle and chickens also represent dress codes for jobs done in testing our humanity.  God's mercy is upon the souls who have done their jobs or gone through suffering. They shall find happiness living in God's code of conduct in His kingdom. Yet, the wealthy and handsome children in the western countries living in peace and comfort often find themselves living in boredom to take drugs for high, indulging themselves in awful pain and death. Therefore, the external images of people and environment do not represent happiness at all.”

“What kind of celestial government would there be?”
“Freedom without greed! Observing a plant, you know its roots die gradually when being over watered or over fertilized.  So is the celestial body.  Death comes from greed and nothing else. Besides, jealousy is the cause of war. Controlling oneself from getting jealous like the Snake is to preserve freedom for oneself and loved ones.”

“Would perfection bring society to a stand still and death?”
“The perfection in one subject is not the perfection in all subjects.  The knowledge of an adult is not the knowledge of a child that needs education.  Therefore, if an adult has reached righteousness, he still has a job in educating a child or taking care of animals.  There is no time for stand still in universe.  One generation's achievement in righteousness will bring forth the beginning of next generation, making the universe grow with one new planet after another. A planet doesn't represent one person but one society. Therefore at a distance, our development is watched by ancestors all the time that our sixth sense can feel ghosts and aliens around, giving us intuition now and then.”

“How can a devil be ever converted into saint?”
“Jealousy was the cause of the snake, the fallen angel, teaching Eve in doubting God’s goodwill in warning her not to touch the deadly fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.  What the devil desired was God’s love for itself like a jealous spouse, making God punish those being manipulated by it into sins.  Yet, God’s love is like sunshine great enough in giving life to all creatures in universe without depleting the devil any.  However, upon concentrating on a particular person, that one would be scorched to death by ardent flame. Thus jealousy is bad for everybody. After being punished badly for misleading Eve into sin, the devil may not do that again but try a proper way in gaining God's love.”

“You may find corruption and tyranny in every rank of government officials all over the world with nothing to do with jealousy but greed and power play.  For instance, it is said that in applying for a business license in India, one may not even get it after a year: the application may never be looked at.”
“That's a lack of education and understanding without knowing the quantity and quality of each necessity. Pouring gasoline all over a car would catch fire although it is necessary to fill its tank; likewise, eating or taking more than one needs is naturally harmful to oneself. With understanding of the cause of sickness, children won't be so stupid to accept bribe in future.”

“Men won’t learn from their mistakes by free will.  Americans have proven that showering an Afghan city with missiles had only driven innocent children homeless without the ability in catching bin Laden. Still, they repeated the same mistake again in trying to get Saddam Hussein by making war on Iraq with the country easily conquered but without any chemical weapon being found!”
“Truly, President had made this war disregarding the resolutions of The United Nations. According to worldwide survey shown on television, people except Australians think America is second to Al-Qaida as terrorists spreading war worldwide.  Many people judge President Bush going to war on Iraq for oil and others say the contracts for rebuilding Iraq with work contracted out simply for putting money quietly into the big shots’ pockets which American citizens have no way to question. Bush is truly bullying other countries to support him fighting his personal war in madness against one country after another, making innocent children homeless and our soldiers killed with friendly fire!  He should change his attitude because his own people wouldn’t be fooled by him for long.”

“The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome had claimed 36 deaths in its first four months outbreak in Toronto.  People without a cough or fever, returned to Toronto from China, were quarantined ten days. Our Health Minister declared that travelers at Canadian airports would soon have their temperatures scanned before boarding a plane to fight the spread of SARS!  Yet, drug has killed more people. Vancouver is providing free needle exchange for drug addicts and BC is being chosen to grow marijuana for Canada while in the city of Vancouver alone, our police know the addresses of two thousand illegal marijuana growers whom they have no power to handle. Putting a criminal in jail costs an average of $67,688 a year like paying a professor’s salary. To satisfy drug addicts’ need of high, there is an average of 721 break-in cases a day in Canada, causing more death than SARS. Besides, car accident deaths in BC were 414 cases in 2001.  How can these car accident and break-in cases with drive-by shootings compare with SARS to make it more serious for public health?”

“Truly, SARS can’t affect all family members in close contact or there can’t be just one nurse in BC being affected by three unknown SARS patients.  I guess whoever being over-worked, like the nurse, Susan Sorrenti, that worked 60 hours a week in Toronto, is more likely to be effected by SARS.  So there should be time to work and time to rest.  The death rate of SARS is from five percent to twenty-five percent according to age, genes and strength.
“As habit taught from childhood to breathe gently and lightly, I have the breathing rate of 65% of a normal person.  If I wear any surgical mask to work, I can’t breathe at all.  So, I won’t wear mask even if there is SARS around.
“Besides, every year there is a new virus coming up. It is pointless for seniors like myself taking flu shot every year as recommended that many of us won’t take it. Seniors may easily die of a common cold with or without shots or remedies since the aging body has less and less energy.
“People are born to live courageously disregarding when would they die. We are forever safe in God’s hands especially upon the day of our death.  Fear of sickness and death brings panic that won’t help our fate at all but speeds up calamity with mistakes.  That’s all I can say.”

17  --  SCIENCE  &  BELIEFS

Scientists believe 400 million years ago, there were only two continents: Laurasia in the north and Gondwanaland in the south separated by the Tethys Sea.  North America had broken away from Europe 200 million years later, followed by South America splitting away from Africa in another 100 million years, giving rise to the Atlantic Ocean.
The world is growing with molten rocks arising from earth's core to form plates. Flowing from ocean into continent, these plates cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions; flowing outwards from a continent, they widen North America four inches a year.  Land was composed of rocks and deserts without soil. After millions years of ecosystem, rocks and dead plants finally turned into soil.

Marsupial mammals were all over the world 80 million years ago but restricted now to Australia after being gradually replaced by placental mammals in other parts of the world. Obviously, with the world growing in size and changing in temperature, a species must change its habits, adapting to environment for survival - bringing forth the evolution theory.

The first Java man was discovered living 1.9 million years ago while the first African was found living 100,000 years ago. Through evolution, observation and learning from one another, homosapiens could use tools and fire 80,000 years ago. Then they were found worldwide 30,000 years ago with hunters and gatherers sharing food and spreading worldwide.

About ten thousand years ago, farming was developed and privately owned to support a small group of people. Since there were droughts and floods, farmers learned to share their produce, forming alliances with other communities through marriages or friendship in different villages. Then, in hard time, a South East Asian wife would go first to stay with her relative far away while her husband would go later on to another relative’s village without adding heavy burden onto the same group of distant relatives.

Civilizations began in the Nile Valley and Mesopotamia about six thousand years ago with sheep and horses first domesticated in Zagros Mountains. Around 3000 BC, writing was invented by Sumerians and by Egyptians.  When Mesopotamia was under the military reign of Sargon of Agade in 2370 BC, there were granaries built for food storage and redistribution. However, with military men and noblemen to feed, it had caused empires great problems in years of droughts and floods, which might last from a few months to a few years.  So fell many ancient empires during the long years of famines.  Besides, fertile land could become poor land under intensified farming of one crop. Even the land needs a rest every seventh year. Farmers could not stay on for generations in same area while farming should also be spreading all over the world.

Often, a violent volcanic eruption on ocean floor causes extremely warm water air coming up, turning into terrible El Niño, a violent hurricane, bringing severe flooding to one region. Then the next hurricane becomes dry as La Niña, bringing severe draught, famine and forest fires to other regions. In 1450, there were four years of crop failures in Mexico brought by the effects of the horrible hurricane couple, Niño-Niña in addition to a locust plague.

In 1769, ten million people died of starvation in India within two years.  One hundred years later, the drought in China had starved to death 13 million people while another 70 million had been severely affected. Then in 1972, Kenya, South Brazil, and the western coast of South America were severely flooded while Asia, Middle East, Australia, and America had drought. The following year due to the effects of the hurricane couple: Niño-Niña, Mississippi had heavy flooding like the western coast of South America and Europe just in contrast to South Africa that got the drought later.

Through out history, nature has been killing people and animals alike in extremely large scale with draught and starvation. School children must learn emergency skills to survive in long-term adversity, conquering natural disaster with home gardening, preserving seeds for fast growing fruit and legumes like tomatoes, peas and beans in pots.

Usually, air moves from high-pressure area to low-pressure area producing local winds.  The summer sun heats up oceans with warm air carrying water vapour, rising up as monsoon blowing from high-pressure to low-pressure regions: bringing summer rain in Asia but dry winter there with air moving from land to the ocean.

The spinning motion of the Earth produces three kinds of  wind:
   1. Trade Winds blow clockwise in the north and anti-clockwise in the south from 30o Latitude towards the Equator and from east to west caused by the spinning of the earth.  These winds go faster near the Equator.
   2. Prevailing Westerly Winds with warm air rising up from oceanic Equator over 30o Latitude north and south respectively, drop quietly at Horse Latitudes to blow up to 60o Latitude.
   3. Polar Easterly Winds blow gently down to 60o Latitude north or south respectively.  Upon meeting the prevailing westerly winds, they shift in direction to circle around the earth at the poles.

Scientists have instruments to measure and predict an abnormal weather of the ocean where the underwater volcanic eruption has started. Can scientists in the near future use something like a rocket to shoot at the passages of el Niño and la Niña to control the atmospheric pressure in eliminating severe floods, droughts and great forest fires?

With advance science, animals can now be cloned from a breast cell. Adult cell cuts short the life of a cloned animal for carrying the donor’s age with it further, that was shown in the cloned sheep Dolly born on July 5, 1996 at Roslin Institute with arthritis in January 2002 and progressive lung disease in February 2003.  However, can a soul be cloned along in genes?  According to the report of Texas A&M University in 2002, cloned pets lost the adult behaviour and personality of the original pets. Scientists haven’t got the power in transferring or duplicating the soul of the old body into the cloned body.  Where does the ignorant soul of a cloned animal come from and what does birth mean to different kinds of peoples?

Australian aboriginal people believe in spirits entering pregnant women’s wombs before their babies could be born. So, a spirit must depart from somewhere first as death before it can come alive elsewhere as Jesus Christ had left heaven to be born on earth.

According to African tribal belief, a person is composed of numerous souls of former lives and of the spirits of parents fused into the body by God.
What does numerous souls mean - the combine learning of former lives developing into a character? What is parental spirit? An embryo starts learning during the gestation period with feeling influenced much by the habits of parents that people can indeed react through the reflect arcs of the nervous system with learnt habits, bypassing the thinking process.

Christians believe in the Holy Ghost entering them as in apostles, bringing them the gift of speech in foreign tongues. Thus, a person is composed of numerous souls with God’s words carved in conscience as well.  In fact, Hinduism includes all these sayings, regarding the root chakra of a human body as genes, revealing the characters and life of parents. The womb chakra reveals the talents of previous life as natural instinct. The solar plexus reveals the ego and the free will of a person that plans actions. The heart chakra reveals personal ambition and goal on earth. The throat chakra reveals personality with speech and attitude. The brow chakra integrates knowledge, intuitions and weird dreams into power of reasoning in sensing the truth. The crown chakra is memory, being the spiritual body in light form with character as soul like software that can be separated from its computer hardware to travel in dreams without the body.

Speaking of a soul departing in light form, it mentions in 2 Kings 2:11, Elisha had seen ‘Elijah taken onto a chariot of horses of fire; carried up by a whirlwind into heaven.’ Obviously, some people can see ghosts or can feel ghosts around while others can see ghosts in their dreams.  Ghosts take the form of personal characters.

God gives prophets the power of resurrecting people as says in Ezekiel 37:4–6, ‘Prophesy upon these bones ... I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.’  Have any one resurrected besides the one resurrected by Jesus Christ?

In a car accident in 1984, Arkansas, 20-year-old Terry woke up from coma 19 years later, on June 12, 2003 at Stone County Nursing Center.  This demonstrates the undying love of parents and the care of society upon a person in coma, bringing a departed soul back to earth.

I also know a widow with four children, worked as chef in Los Angeles, laid in coma for fifteen hours after a car accident. Waking up with broken neck and shoulder, she told people the wait station over the gate looked like a costume party. When the doorkeeper couldn’t find her name in his book, she was told that her time hadn’t come yet.  He kicked her bottom hard that she returned to life with the purpose of serving her children continuously. Her health had been restored after a $1.5 million surgery.

What is God's role on earth to different religions?
In African tribal belief, God doesn’t involve with human affairs as people don’t involve in judging ants’ affairs.  Only God’s servants, the demi-gods, human ancestors, may inflict bad lucks upon people: ignoring obligations to relatives would cause the anger of ancestors to induce illness and bad luck upon oneself. Similarly, Jesus assures Christians that God would send us a Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to guide us spiritually. The Chinese also believe being guided by conscience especially in crucial moment. No matter religious or not, people often pray in their critical moment; God’s advice will come then in correct timing to write in human hearts. Many people do meditation too, trying to connect with God. Israelis have received the Ten Commandments to be observed.  So God’s role on earth is teaching humanity in conscience, sending us messengers to reinforce righteousness, wiping out ignorance in our nature.

Certainly, God is pleased with ancestors, parents, gurus and saints being honoured for their good deeds as our role models. Personally, I find the offering of flowers, plants and fruits could be much better than incense and candles as cloudy smoke causes the depletion of fresh air and difficulty in breathing. Unhealthy gifts have little meaning since Jesus says in St. John 4:23 ‘worship the Father in spirit and in truth.’ So, we have to understand which theory or principle is true.

The Pope in 1632 put Galileo into Inquisition for believing in Copernican theory that the earth is in motion and it is not the center of the universe. Nowadays, the Pope admitted that Inquisition was wrong. Likewise, should Christians still believe in the Trinity Doctrine without judgment while it was against Jesus’ words said in John 14:28 that "the Father is greater than I am."

Having morality alone will bring people pessimism without hope due to the endless forgiveness of sins or bribery of judgement, leading to victims' eternal suffering from mental to physical sicknesses with will to die, to become nothingness.  God's righteousness must last forever to protect every creature in the universe as says in Isaiah 52:6 “the heavens shall vanish away like smoke ... but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.  (66:3) He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck.”

Buddhism talks about eighteen levels of hell or wait stations. With the soul of baby coming from reincarnation, where to be born may depend on former behaviour as in which grade and which school a soul should be sent. Even Jesus Christ was told where to be born.  Thus human fate comes from a righteous saint's judgement at wait station: to reincarnate either as a person or other being since a body without an incarnated spirit is stillborn or dead.  If people don't fulfil their duty on earth assigned by conscience, can they die in peace with no further judgement?

Jesus talks about the wait station or underworld in Luke 16:20-26, giving the parable of a beggar Lazarus and a rich man. The soul of Lazarus went to stay with Abraham in heaven while the rich man's soul was tormented with thirst in underworld. Lazarus could not go to give the rich man even a drop of water. So there is no such thing as death for a soul in any religion but a wait station or judgement or reincarnation.
A soul learning through the medium of a body will never die. God has kept even the souls of devils alive with imprisonment as stated in St. John's Revelation 20:7 that ‘When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison.’  None of the soul of weakling or criminal can die even after committing suicide.

It also states in Ezekiel 33:11, God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but the wicked turn from his way and live.  Thus, death doesn't let anyone escape self-judgment without doing penitence. We are bound to learn justice and behaviour on earth.  Well, besides observing law without doing evils, how should men live to satisfy the judges, society or Mother Nature?

Chinese Taoism is somewhat a scientific way of talking about human body with instincts, feelings, imagination and free will designed for learning to live according to nature, hygiene, proper diet, breathing and impartial attitude to reach immortality. People must avoid extremities not just in food quantity such as fat, protein, salt and sugar but in exercise and in strategy, balancing pros and cons in theories as keeping positive and negative ions in atoms to maintain a harmonious living in universe.

God definitely gives each nation some specialities and culture for the co-operation of all nations in trade and in entertainment. Our First Nations are famous for Eskimo Kayaks, native totem posts, canoes, and potlatches in giving expensive gifts away to guests. It is also getting popular for people to enjoy classical music, Latin dance, African drum, and Chinese cooking. Truly, yoga from India is also very popular in developing flexibility and good postures, helping in relaxation, breathing and healing.  So can touch therapy with acupuncture removing tumours since ancient days as laser surgery does in modern day. Thus, Jehovah tells Israelis in Ezekiel 47:22, “and to the strangers ... they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.” Likewise, Jesus also says that people should learn from the Good Samaritan to be blessed.  People must understand the importance of having land and ocean alike for life without prejudice against others’ customs.

The knowledge of God is so great, how can a mortal messenger understand what God says such as a tree will bear forth different kinds of fruit each month without personal experience?  Therefore, a messenger of God can hardly deliver one-billionth of God's message to mankind without audience's mis-understanding. It takes the collective knowledge of all messengers in much later time to know God's plan and predictions without making mistakes. Thus, Hindus absorb all sensible theories into Hinduism.

God has planned a salvation for Eve and her descendants that they may triumph over Satan in bruising his head as says in Genesis 3:15. Has He processed His plan successfully step by step in teaching us to examine the differences between the good and the bad without falling ignorantly into Satan's tricks?

Charting historical events of the changes in society, from aristo-cracy to democracy, from ignorance into wisdom and understanding, from jealousy into compassion, from domination into service provider, we can understand that the educational process is going on smoothly as God has planned. People are learning to protect their environment and to share land with wildlife without dominating over them. Peace may finally come with work for all creatures in the future.

18  –  THEORY  &  PRACTICE

Susan is Carmela’s daughter that got pregnant at the age of thirty-eight. Carmela wanted to visit her in San Francisco two weeks before the baby was due because a baby might be born earlier than expected. However, Susan trusted her friends’ advice that the firstborn child would often come late. She bought her parents plane tickets in advance to visit her for a month on the due date that Carmela could help taking care of her baby.  Yet, Stella was born four weeks earlier than expected.  During Susan’s sudden labour hour, her husband, Jimmy, was out of town. Luckily, her cousin, Rolanda, a family economy counsellor working in the hospital, had stayed with her.  It was a natural birth that took three hours. Baby Stella was a strong, healthy and chubby baby of six pounds five ounces. She couldn’t suck her mother’s milk well the first two days. Nurses should comfort new mothers that it is normal not to have much milk in the first three to five days of breast-feeding.
Every breast-feeding takes about half of an hour to forty-five minutes and it is to be done again every two to three hours.  Then the baby pees thirty minutes later. A mother simply has no rest in changing diapers and feeding baby. To shorten the feeding time at night, Susan stores up her milk in plastic bags milked with electric pump for bottle-feeding.

In her second week, Stella started growing one ounce a day, two pounds a month. Just a week old, she already knew how to refuse taking more milk whenever she was full.  Force-feeding would cause her vomiting. Her head grew very fast with chin developed: a chubby round head soon became a chubby oblong head. Her inner system had so much development in six weeks that she started having difficulty in adapting the past habits of sucking milk and going to stool that she cried a bit in frustration.  Sometimes, she couldn’t go to stool five to six days; then whenever she did, her pants got very dirty and must be bathed immediately.

Susan demanded Carmela reading to Stella. Carmela found it pointless to do so.  She would only sing the number and alphabet to the baby repeatedly. After singing for a few minutes, she coughed out of breath.  So she often hummed with her nose or whispered in low voice, dancing with Stella in her arms. What baby Stella likes most is a person looking into her eyes and humming to her. She begins to sing back after four months.  So must words be simple and repetitious for her to learn.

Hundreds of baby gifts poured in from countless people Susan has known from work, and from health spa.  Her two cousins went to visit the newborn baby once every week.  They enjoyed looking at the baby.  Yet, when Susan wanted someone to babysit Stella for three hours, no friend or cousin would help her out. Both Rolanda and Alma are afraid that they couldn’t serve the baby properly. Susan sighed in disappointment, “I thought people loved my baby but actually, no one loved her.  I have to give up my job to serve my baby.”
Carmela replied, “People can love babies and look at them with interest but babies are not easy to be amused.  So you want to be away from Stella for a few hours to relax yourself too. You can’t ask a busy and exhausted person to look after your baby except someone who needs to earn your money for a living.  Now you know the meaning of being a mother.”

As a professional woman, Susan could only take three months off without pay but she must return to work even just for the family medical insurance since Jimmy has bought none as being a self-employed engineer consultant. He goes biking with his friends in weekend afternoon, staying in their house drinking and watching sports on television till midnight when Susan cleans the house and does shopping.

According to survey, executive men would have about four hours a week with their children and executive women, ten to twelve hours. In this modern age, a wife with steady income is often the main bread earner while a man’s earning fluctuated with investment, is simply for pleasure: buying his own toys such as new car and boat or taking holiday trips.  No matter how rich they are, they may forget paying mortgages and bills.  Blessed are the wives whose men have such memory of paying bills or fixing the falling roof of their house.

Susan found herself quite absentminded. After depositing a cheque in bank machine, she forgot to get back her credit card. She told some new mothers about her absentmindedness and they claimed that they had mislaying something frequently as well or forgetting to get back their changes in stores.

Has Susan lost her mind with her house full of stuffs in boxes lining up the stairs and all dresser drawers and closets couldn’t be closed with stuffs falling down all the time or James never bothers to close them himself? She ordered a book through Internet and the company keeps on sending her book every month.  She wanted to buy one thing but always got more than one or the wrong stuff waiting to be returned if she ever has time!  Personally, I have fear in shopping on Internet.

Can a new mother relax with an average round trip to work taking about two hours and another hour of lunch break, being absent from home for eleven hours, collecting just eight-hour salary a day but paying eleven hours baby-sitting expenses? Whoever earns forty dollars an hour has a net income about ten dollars an hour after paying income tax, transportation expenses and a nanny.  After work, a mother does shopping, house cleaning, cooking and amusing children till their bed time with less than eight hours of sleep.  Then, with a small businessman as husband, a wife like Susan has to be his bookkeeper and secretary at weekends too.

By law, Canadian can’t enter the States legally to look after a grandchild or sick relative. Employing a nanny in the States costs around twelve dollars an hour. An employer must apply for an employer identification number, withholding employee’s federal and state income taxes, employment training tax and state disability insurance; paying part of their unemployment tax, social security tax and medical insurance to be sent to the Internal Revenue Service. Calculating all these payments to IRS is a lot of work that Susan employs an accountant to do it, adding expense upon expense while Canadian household employers don’t have to report to the government at all.

On weekdays, Susan wouldn’t cook until Jimmy is home because he refuses to eat any food that is cooked in advance. However, he comes home sometimes around nine in the evening already eaten. Then, Susan would go to bed bitterly without supper. She must get up at five to get onto a bus at six in the morning to work.

Why should a wife wait for husband home to have supper together when he is late, drinking with friends in bar or working overtime in office?  Such waiting is of course a subtle pressure in restricting his freedom of getting home late.  Still, his promise of coming home in fifteen minutes often extends from an hour to three while chatting with clients.  That would starve not just his spouse but child too.  Jimmy doesn’t mind cooking and eating alone at his own timing. He needs time and space for himself undisturbed, watching television alone till two o’clock in the morning. Sometimes, he sleeps on sofa through the night.  He loves Stella but can’t hold and amuse her over fifteen minutes unless he is jogging with her in the stroller.  Not everybody has patience chatting and playing with baby.  Thus Jimmy had refused to have a baby in the first five years of his marriage.

It is not easy to get a man’s consent in having babies. I know an American lawyer who has a boyfriend for fifteen years; still he refused to father her child although she is anxious to have children. Being 42 years old, she finally went abroad to adopt a little girl in South America and another in Russia to satisfy her own joy of motherhood while her mother does the babysitting. Married or not married, a professional woman has to have a backup plan supporting a family alone nowadays.  I must consider whether I can afford to stay home a year serving baby.  Apparently, I can do that in Canada better than in the States.

Television news reported that American family medical insurance reaching up to one-third of some employees' monthly salary that employer is unwilling to contribute. Many seniors’ prescription drugs also cost over a thousand dollars a month that they buy through mail from Canada, cutting one-third of their expenses. So the universal low cost medical insurance in Canada is another benefit to be Canadians than Americans.

Susan’s hospital bill came to over eighteen thousand dollars for the three days there!  The hospital room alone is US$2,600 a day.  The price will be doubled if a person is not giving birth in the city where one is insured: for example, during a trip out of town.  A traveler may go bankrupt by giving birth to a baby in the States! A working mother having a newly-born child can collect welfare six weeks or less in the United States; however, living in Canada, such a mother can collect a year of unemployment insurance.  So the Canadian policy makes it financially easier for women having babies.

Anyway, where there is will power, God can show people various ways in achieving their goals of bringing up next generation.  It is courage that can overcome difficulties step by step.  For sure, I can’t offer my babies the best genes and environment, best nanny and education on earth but babies need chances to be born with mothers’ best intention and services towards them.  That is the first step.  God in children’s conscience will take care the rest of their development as He has taken care of mine.

19  --  EFFECTS  OF  DREAMS

During our sleep, our brains sort out automatically our skills and daily affairs into long-term and short-term memories. While our eyes are moving in sleep to replay what we have seen and read in daytime for the brain to make sense in filing them in order, we wouldn't notice of doing so upon waking up.  However, some dreams may come with scenes, which we have never seen in our lifetime that troubled us.  Waking up, people must figure out a solution.  Thus, back in 1996, I had a dream, suspecting there was a car accident on Aunt Tracy's wedding. My father was following slowly behind Uncle Samuel's car. There came a speeding white van sideways as if it were going to hit Samuel's blue car at a curve down hill that was off my view. Afterwards, I found both the blue car and the white van parked on a lawn with nobody inside or around that I couldn't ask whether anyone had been hurt.

I told Grandaunt Laura, Tracy's mother, about my dream few years later. Laura asked, “Do you remember the seven lean cows eating up the seven fat cows of the pharaoh's dream?”
“Yes.  I do.  Joseph explained that was seven years of good harvest to be followed by seven years of famine: people must take action saving for the bad years to come.”

“Well, knowing famine would come after seven years of good harvest, could anyone stop its coming?”
   “No.”

“So, Joseph simply prepared for its coming by saving food in righteous manner to solve the country's problem. Consequently, people could relax and enjoy seven leisure years. Therefore, should you scare people off Tracy's wedding with prediction of an accident or you should learn to drive without speeding to avoid accidents that guests could enjoy the wedding?”
“I see, if I had told people my dream of sensing a car accident, I could have scared everybody off Tracy's wedding and ruined her day.  Yet, the suspected accident hadn't happened at all but it has stayed curiously in my mind for years wondering the meaning of it.”

“God deals in righteousness with dream indicating certain time that you should be alerted in doing something righteously for others.  Your dream had meant to persuade you in slowing down to eliminate accidents such as falling down the steps and slamming car door at your granduncle's fingers during the week of  Tracy's wedding but it didn't work.”

I argued, “But you have said that nobody could prevent the seven bad years from coming after the seven good years as the dream indicated. Those accidents were bound to be happened."

"Signs represent timing of your coming examination without indicating your grade.  Seven lean years indicated just the time for a change in lifestyle from work to rest and to study after having seven good years of harvest without telling you personally what you should do.  You could leave the country or stay.  Indeed, Samuel's car had been slightly hit from behind before the wedding that got him a white van free for a week driving double the number of guests around to enjoy the wedding. So the white van you had seen in your dream was actually driven by Samuel. You should have positive thinking even of a nightmare, figuring out a good solution to ensure safety for your car landing safely in front of the restaurant as indicated in your dream.
“A dream is no more than questioning and alerting your decision: would you be speeding dangerously like other teenagers in showing off driving skill or be modest in driving cautiously.  Besides, you can't stop driving simply because someone may hit your car accidentally. You have to do your duty courageously as a captain can't abandon his ship on high sea in a stormy night.”

Although Jesus says that God doesn't judge men, a teacher always grades the papers of his students. So how would the judges in wait-station grade us for Eve's sin rather than our standard of understanding?

Laura asked how I could achieve my goal of bringing up happy children when given three chances to be wrong?

Ah, she doesn’t expect me to be perfect; that should be a release.  Well, I must first be cautious about the genes of my children that I can’t get a sick spouse’s sperms into my body!

Second, the virtue of blind obedience to a spouse or authority is definitely not for a vegetarian mother to observe. I must have a trustworthy spouse who swears in wedding vow to respect my character, my freedom in belief, and my personal finance control.

Third, if I choose happiness before decency, I may get drunk with friends and ruin the health of my fetus or kill a child accidentally with impaired driving.  I must keep my head forever sober to deal with my duties with work ethics and humanity guidelines.  So I do respect Moslems for abstaining from alcohol that I would put their rule as my first basic guideline since police also warns us of no drunk driving too:

  1. Drive soberly on a two-way traffic with mutual respect of pedestrian right.
  2. Speak honestly and sincerely to maintain peace.
  3. Put duties towards children and clients above personal interest.
  4. Look for common principles and interests in religions and philosophy.
  5. Accept truth with patience to correct mistakes.
  6. Observe safety rules and God's words carved in conscience.
  7. Let faith in God save me from self-defence stepping into terrorism.
  8. Gain self-esteem from fulfilling personal destiny on earth.
  9. Find freedom in letting go of ego and devilish thoughts of manipulation.
10. Express love in services without expecting any desire to be fulfilled.
11. Keep fit with yoga exercise and vegetarian diet.
12. Expand everlasting happiness on teamwork in building up sanctuaries.

People get drunk and laugh at jokes or stupidity.  This is not truly happiness.  Even success at top of the mountain can't bring forth happiness for long because nobody can stay forever on top of the mountain to feel happy.  One has to go down the mountain to climb another higher mountain to reach for another success or to conquer another adversity, taking another challenge to find happiness.  I recalled the brilliant and young philosopher, John Mill (1806-1873) thought of committing suicide at the age of eighteen because he felt lonely in a crowd.  Finally, he realized that happiness of the majority instead of one's own worldly achievement should be the center of happiness.

Actually, the thought and the courage of conquering poverty on earth can make us happy, giving us hope.  The spirit of that thought passing onto next generations put our hope last forever. Hope in continuation is then our source of happiness whether our goal has succeeded today or not.  Otherwise, the success will make us think of another goal to achieve, another mountain to climb such as removing all sicknesses on earth.

On November 19, 2002 off the coast of Spain, an old oil tank, Prestige, carrying 75 million litres of fuel oil, split and sank, leaking one third of the oil into sea, killing birds and fish likewise.  There came then five thousand volunteers to some 100 beaches cleaning up oil with buckets for three weeks before government taking some action. Unknown heroes are working silently everywhere on earth, hoping for a world of cleanliness and peace.

Being a hero or an angel in one way doesn’t make a person an almighty god fighting injustice single-handed. The messiah would fight for justice only with his tongue of reasoning. Avengers would be digging their own family graves till none survives as in family feud, tribal wars, gang wars and civil wars. Retaliation also provokes suicide bombing to missile falling: from nuclear to chemical warfare with the termination of innocent people, plunging into worse sin one after another.

Given time, five years later, the youth, who kicked the host’s intruded neighbor to death at a party in Squamish in 1997, came forward willingly to admit his sin to police, redeeming his peace with his own conscience - the judge. Thus, even invisible to human eyes, God’s justice forever exists!

Healing comes from providing compassion and basic needs to all creatures -- to remove the causes of crime. Thus investigating the causes of crime is an essential part of healing leading to righteousness, stopping harmful, meaningless revenge and retaliation.

Let’s examine why would there be any industrial waste dumping on earth?  All waste comes from raw materials that cost money and they should be reclaimed and reused to save resources. With such thought, in 1975, 3M Company started preventing the release of 1.5 billion pounds of pollutants into the environment in Singapore, building its own sewage treatment plants - separating all kinds of waste to reclaim 75% of the metals in 1990, and 99% in 1998.  It also pumps back 50% of the exiting water for reuse, saving the company $810 million.  We can always learn from mistakes that waste should never be wasted as landfill.  However, it has taken many specialists and engineers twenty-three years of hard work to solve just one problem that any finger pointing won't work at all.

According to the Fifth Estate report on television that in Kitchener, Ontario, there was a dumpsite with landfill converted into residential zone.   While hundreds of new houses were built, methane gas had found its way out beneath the foundation, blowing up one of the houses into pieces. Still, those new houses were sold with the incident removed from city records. Twenty-six of those houses were later found with methane gas in the basement causing sicknesses to children and bankruptcies to owners.  Greed or fear of punishment is definitely the main cause of covering up the flaw of the site and the accident.  What do other people learn from this – buyer beware?

Many Hong Kong high-rises are built on reclaimed land, so are the high-rises of the former Expo '86 site in Vancouver with no health hazard at all.  Human beings should appreciate the courage of fulfilling a dream disregarding failures in many ways. Failure could be the mother of success.  Besides, we can still pass an examination with 40% failure and 60% success just as I would enjoy home cooking or a drive-in restaurant instead of a first class restaurant that I can’t afford.

Since our Canadian government has very good auto insurance policy that victims get paid by insurance company disregarding who has caused the accident, saving enormous court fee and judge's time, this policy should also apply to land and houses inspected by government. Then, government may sue builders and developers for any malpractice, making it to be known to public. This saves victims' mental health expenses: otherwise, victims’ tremendous health expenses will come out of government's medical plan later on, a thousand dollars a day per patient in hospital.

Obviously, righteousness doesn’t deal with direct consequence alone but having indirect consequences included. Law should not let any lawsuit hurt the innocent third party. Flaws and mistakes should be studied like the 3M case without finger pointing, sharing technique and information to save the environment. Fixing faults in work or in policy can certainly offer people healthy living physically, mentally and spiritually with open discussion.

We all have dreams. Success can never come smoothly without unexpected events but we must stick to our plan. Relaxation and satisfaction come from completing our daily duties with good spirit and patience disregarding new problems coming up one after another, which may just increase our wisdom.  In fact, clean water is the most important element in life that men and animals have been fighting for since ancient days up to the present.  The world wouldn't be lack of projects in providing clean water to needed areas. If men try to think why God doesn’t provide us with all the water we need, apparently, He is encouraging us to have fun, using our brains to express our talents in getting clean water rather than getting too drunk to work. Thus, some Canadian companies have invented equipment to catch air moisture to be converted into clean water that can be used in desert area.  Scientists also use distillation and solar screen system to provide men with clean water from dirty water and seawater.  Perhaps, one day, someone may even transport polar icebergs to deserts as well.

God’s love truly has no end as saying in Jeremiah 31:31–34 “I will put my law in their inward parts, and write in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.  They shall teach no more every man his neighbor, ‘Know the Lord’; for they shall all know me. ... and I will remember their sin no more.” Our birth is thus the beginning of God being with us in our conscience and for us to know Him on Earth with eternal life. Love is not in seeing but in feeling with trust. Therefore, we must also respect every creature as unique individual and a temple of God assigned with different kinds of professions for universal co-operation.

Through visions, dreams and teamwork relaying from generations to generations in all nations, has our knowledge been increased, learning to have self-control of a healthy body and an intuitive mind? Are we right on God’s procedure and schedule in forming a humane society with different cultures as a rainbow on earth to be blessed?

Adversities and wars challenge our faith in God. Would men ever build Him the sanctuary to show humanity, raising everybody’s self-esteem with job sharing for the healing of all nations or to wait for the New Jerusalem dropping down like manna from Heaven for grasp? How do we apply our intelligence and spirit that God had taught us through generations in science and in conscience?

What is happiness to parents – listening to their babies saying their first words and watching them to walk their first steps?  We can certainly enjoy others’ success without possessive thoughts.  It is wonderful to be able to love the mountains and rivers without the burden of guarding them, watching neighbours’ gardens blooming up without us watering them.  Without the thought of competition, we can enjoy others’ cooking, writing and inventions to benefit ourselves. Wishing to be the best one would kill our sense of admiration of others’ successes.  Possession can also turn us into slaves of materialism.  What would success be to a dictator in constant fear of falling down one day?  Self-esteem simply comes from fulfilling personal destiny and duties, doing our daily affairs the best we can.  Respect comes from decency and friendliness.

Certainly, teachers and masters won’t demand us to be greater than they are; God even stays meekly invisible, giving us inspirations quietly in our conscience without desiring to be our master.  Life is to appreciate others’ work as much as one’s own. Furthermore, an intelligent being can’t be satisfied with comfort and wealth but to share his ideas and arts with friends and clients to be appreciated through communication and exchange or cooperation and sale. Practical education helps people achieve independence, bringing peace on earth. Such spirit or goal is propelled behind the ability that turns energy into production work. The strength lasts forever with the power of relay from generations to generations.

Yet Strength comes first from self-control of temper and diet to keep fit and negotiation with children and opposite parties to reach personal goal.  Services, rewards and praises are good bargaining tools without need of command, violence and yelling.  As God also writes His words in all human hearts, so in our silence, the inner voice of opposition party has time to speak for us, bringing up their sense to negotiate our differences, understanding that we are all unique persons with special needs. Vegetarians and cattle don’t eat meat and should never be forced feeding with meat. All races and species have the right to choose their own food and clothing, hobbies and career.  After all, it is impossible for a dress to fit the sizes of everybody on earth under all weather in water and on land. Each dress is just a fragment of one’s wardrobe.  Likewise, each religion and each branch of knowledge is just one fragment of God’s wisdom that takes people billion years to learn that no human being or master can know it all. So God’s help is spiritual guidance whispering in conscience tailoring to each person’s need at special hour.

Authentic power is free of fear, taking adversity as fate for us to do greatness in solving problem coolly and sensibly with intuition. War and wickedness would never get any real gain but cripple us mentally with fear of revenge and terrorism. So our personal power is self-control with self-respect, listening to the righteousness written in our heart constantly. It is winning the respect of both friends and enemies that makes a person great like a journalist: being attentive listener and eyewitness without judgment, going to war zones to report news to the world. Opposition parties, wise or foolish, learnt or unlearnt, all want their sides of story to be known.  Given a chance to speak up is always welcome.  Then the problem or argument may solve wisely by itself after a silent meditation.

What are parents’ responsibilities?  It definitely starts from pregnancy. Mother’s environment, food and drugs influence fetus’ health. Consequently, babies can be born healthy or with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and many kinds of diseases. Truly, teenagers should learn all the facts about sex, drugs and finance to avoid making mistakes.  Love is to care for the future of all parties without harming loved ones in jealousy or ignorance. Let’s hope this generation would enjoy nature and simplicity that they can keep fit with self-control in diet and temper, cooperating with opposition parties harmoniously to bring forth a new paradise in universe.

Some parents drive children to school because there may be peer pressure, drug addicts and rapists at or around school area. Should children live in fear and hiding?  What can teachers do to protect students?  It is proven useless to expel violent students from school because they would come back to kill as well.  So moral education, teamwork and responsibility must be taught from daycare up to learn that even a movie can’t be made without variety of musicians and actors and actresses. Individual talents are needed and everybody is unique with special talents for cooperation in society.  No children would live in hiding once they all learn morality to observe moral rules.

Putting one criminal in jail costs six to nine thousand dollars a month, equivalent to three worker's salaries. To save such expenses, government has the alternative of providing decent daycare centres offering moral education to toddlers and job training to teenagers, raising their self-esteem and keeping them healthy with migrant shelters for people seeking work, eliminating them from being pushed into drug dealers’ hands in streets.

Heavens have cherubim and seraphs, angels and saints of different grades of intelligence while we are also connected to God that whispers in our conscience. So our salvation is to remove egoism and jealousy to empower one another with praise for what a person can do well, naming each one of his good work to prosper the world that a person won’t have time to do silly or absurd things. Then the world will have peace that is also in us and with us forever and ever.

Education doesn’t bring me greatness but gets me smaller and smaller after reading others’ adventurous stories and great deeds. I question why is God so kind to me - someone that is so small?  Well, God has arranged the curriculum of our education in conscience with everybody having a different assignment at different time. The small ones as students should learn independence and be content to observe His commandment without envying others positions or properties.

Truly, a city from Heaven dropped on earth can’t hold the entire population of this world that some people must build their own sanctuaries. A home without pressure but God’s words in our heart is our personal heaven.  Wherever I go, I find a place in the house of friends or relatives and I feel now is the time to pay back my gratitude. I should receive small ones like birds and pets and children into my home too as their hope of living in sanctuary like those I have enjoyed from others’ homes. So it is time for me to say goodbye to dreaming and start doing some practical work. May every home and workplace on earth be also blessed a sanctuary to its occupants from these days on!
